Grandma got Owen a new rubber ball for Christmas, but couldn't wait to give it to him :) . He played with it on Saturday, and I did notice him rubbing his face on the sofa a bit. Then, he played with it again yesterday, and his mouth and gowls swelled up :( !

Could he be allergic to a rubber ball?

I gave hime benadryl and he's still a bit puffy.

He's had an allergic reaction before, but it wasn't to a new toy. Actually I don't know what it was from because he had been given two medications and a new food. That time he may have gotten stung by something as well. I just don't know.

Any advice would be helpful.

Rocky is allergic to plastic and to rubber. I make sure he only gets those toys for a short period of time 1/2 hr. to an hour at most. His face will still turn a little pink but it won't swell up. We also only use stainless steel bowls for everything. :)

sullivanspop: I did rinse it because it had been under the kitchen sink (I'm not a nervous mom or anything  !)

myrocky: He has a Kong (red rubber) and has never had a reaction. Maybe there is something different in this one?

I'm glad to know that he isn't too unusual, but I bet he'll miss his new ball :( .

Can dogs have allergy tests done? Trying to guess what is going to get him puffy is getting a little nerve racking.

Thanks,

I think that Kong is actually a substance on it's own. Like rubber that has been modified in some way. Rocky doesn't have a reaction with kongs either and he has a few kong toys. Squeaky balls and pop bottles most definitly cause his face to puff up though so he doesn't get pop bottles anymore and squeaky balls only for a short time. :)

if they have lipo-suction for dogs, I'm sure you can have an allergy test done...and yes they do have lipo for dogs...as strange and perverted as it sounds.
"Can you take a little off my hips and make my jawls poofier?"

OH! I just started giving him water bottles the other day, no more of that! Are Kong tennis ball things OK? He got two air Kongs from his former Nanna. Owen is going to have a very sad Christmas if he can't have those!

I guess I'm lucky that he always had stainless bowls.

Thanks for the help,

I am at a total loss! Owen had to go to the vet yesterday because his face was still swollen (since Sunday :( .) He got a steriod shot and around 11:00 last night I noticed that his face was getting puffier & hot. He hadn't had benadryl in 24 hours, so I called ER vet to make sure it was OK and gave him one.

I guess that it isn't the ball he's allergic to. Maybe the Christmas tree?? We got it on Sunday too. Although, he had nipped a bit of pine (from a different tree) the week before, and he was OK.

We also put his food in a giant tupperware/rough tote about 10-14 days ago.

I just don't know what to do.

The fill in vet suggested allergy testing at $270  . I want to do it, but must save up money. I just want my boy to be healthy, and I'm afraid to give him anything new. So much for Christmas :( .

Any suggestions?

Has he been drinking the xmas tree water at all?

Everything that is new I would take away, the new tupperware, the ball, even the tree. Wash all his bedding (without bleach) with the detergent, some baking soda and a little white vinegar. You have every right to be concerned if it isn't going away and the shots aren't helping him. You can also check to see if there is a holistic vet in your area who might be able to help.

He is supervised with the tree. He isn't even allowed to SNIFF it, let alone drink the water  .

The ball is long gone, and I am going to get a new bag of dog food tonight. This one will be kept in the bag until I can get a metal container to put it in.

If he doesn't get better by Sunday morning, the tree is out the door.

Thanks MyRocky, I was thinking that I should wash his blanket and his face towel (for after drinking) in case it got something on it.

Thank you all for your help, advise, and warm wishes. It helps make a scary and frustrating time less so :o .
