Well I finally decided I couldn't wait until a skin allergy test to get the girls off the nasty Hill's Ultra Allergen ZD food, so we've been switching them since Sunday night to Natural Balance Venison & Rice. I've posted about their previous foods in the link below.

It's only been 48 hours and they are a lot worse! I was sure hoping this food would do the trick. :( But looking back at all the foods the girls have been on they have all had rice except the Venison & Potato IVD food that Macon started on as a puppy.

Do you think it's the rice or the Venison that they are so allergic to? Macon's poor little toes are red and swollen again. Not as bad as last year yet, but they are definitely on their way. This link is to a picture of her raw little paws in Sept. 2004.http://www.boxerworld.com/photo/showphoto.php/photo/49195/cat/500/ppuser/39045/sl/m

Ugh. I guess I'll be getting the Duck & Potato next.. Any thoughts anyone? I really appreciate all your help :)

Oh my-what an ordeal for you and your babies. I don't have any advice, since I am just starting the "allergy battle", but Ty and I are sending you lots of good luck vibes that you can get both your babies' allergies figured out. I'm hoping the duck and potato works for you and that your next thread is "woo-hoo, we figured out the right food!"

Oh dear. Well it could be either thing - but if he'd never eaten venison before then I'd be more inclined to suspect the rice. But he has had it, so it really could be either thing.

Rice is a grain that's usually better tolerated than most - but if Macon is allergic to it, he won't be the first dog (which is one of the reasons a few grain-free kibbles exist).

In selecting a new kibble, if it can be done, it would be great if you could find something with no ingredients he's had before. That's not going to be easy, I know, since he's had quite a few. But how about a fish/sweet potato formula? Sweet potato is not the same family as standard potato, so that might make the difference...

Thanks Debbie. That's what I was thinking. I'd have to order the fish and sweet potato I think because I had checked around for a local retailer and suprisingly couldn't find one that carried that flavor. I'll search the internet store locators some more today.

Yeah, the dilemma is that she had started on Venison & Potato and was on Nature's Recipe Venison & Rice as well. Unfortunately we thought we were doing the right things all along but now I see that we've made it really hard to figure out what they're allergic to without the test.

I was so suprised that Angel, the Golden, was allergic to this food. I was sure that Chicken was her only allergy but I think with her it's the rice, not to say that she isn't allergic to chicken too  When I looked at when she really started to have problems it was when she was on the Urinary Support food, so I assumed it was the chicken in it. That's what I get for assuming

Thanks for your advice. Unfortunately I'm going to have to put them back on the ZD for a few days until their symptoms are reduced somewhat. Then we'll go for the Fish & Sweet Potato :) Wish me luck

Allergies to Grain

My baby can't eat rice either. Look for Nature's Variety or Pinnacle Trout and Sweet Potato. If you're not adverse to making Homemade Food, try Essex Cottage Farms. You can go raw or cooked. They also have a grain free raw or cooked mixer.

You may also want to try Timberwolf Organics, I think all the formulas other than lamb are rice free. I'm feeding Creek the Ocean Blue mixxed w/t a little canned tripe and he is loving it. Be warned tho, its a little bit expensive (I bought mine via the internet) but seems to be worth it so far.

buffylvangel and gupps, thank you for the advice! I did find a local distributor of Pinnacle finally so I'm getting some samples on Wednesday. I've never heard of the Timberwolf food but I will look around for it. Like you said I may have to go through the internet. :) Thanks again, I appreciate all the help I'm finding here on BW :)

Well this evening was the first trial with Natural Balance Fish/Sweet Potato mixed into their ZD food. Keep your paws crossed for me :)
