Allergic to potatoes

This past month, Chance started chewing on his paws until they were really red. Vet thought it was mange so he got the mange (ivermetcin) shots...it still persisted. So I paid for the $300 allergy test and I found out Chance is allergic to potatoes. He's been eating the potatoes & venison bag food his entire life. :(

This sucks. I feel so bad for my pup. Tula is allergic to chicken and chance is allergic to potato...is their any food that doesn't have both of these? It would really suck if I had to feed them separate foods.

You should be able to find a high quality food for both using that site. Have you considered a raw diet? Or homecooking?

I thought about the home cooking...but Tula is a nibbler and Chance is a guzzler. So, Tula has always had access to food because she only eats small bits at a time. I guess If I home cooked, I'd have to feed Tula in a seperate room so Chance doesn't get her food.

There are lots of foods that don't have chicken or potatoes in them. Lamb and Rice is very common. Dogs can develop allergies over time if they are always eating the same food. This is why it is recommended that you change their food on a regular basis to a food that has a different meat and grain source.

You really shouldn't allow access to good all the time. I am sure that Tula would soon learn to eat up her food, if you always picked it up after 20 minutes or so. You really shouldn't cater to her like that.

I ended up getting some California Natural lamb meal & rice. I'm feeding them separately now, since I'm still using up the previous foods.

Tula is doing good with the controlled feeding. I started mixing in the lamb & rice and that keeps her interested in it. I still need to keep Chance away, since he finishes so quickly.

How often should I switch up their foods? Is it enough to switch back and forth between lamb and duck?

Ideally you should switch foods every couple of months or so. Not only should you switch ingredients, but manufacturers as well. Ideally you should switch between 3 or 4 different types of foods.

Vets don't get a good education on nutrition. They usually get only one class and it is usually sponsored by pet food manufacturers like Hills, which make very poor food. If vets got a decent education on pet food a lot more would be recommending a raw natural diet.

I'm going to stick with controlled feeding. Then I'll have more options as to the different foods I can feed them.

Tula is also starting to devour her portion almost as fast as Chance.

Chance's itching has not improved. His paws are so red from chewing and his face has been scratched raw. How long does it take for a food allergy to go away?

I'm beginning to think it's more than just a food allergy. He was also borderline on bluegrass and half of our backyard is kentucky blue grass :( He likes to graze like a cow too.

I'm going to a new vet tonight. Hopefully they know what they're doing.

I agree with that, Casper had blood taken today for allergy tests and the vet kept trying to force Hills precription food on me :(
