Allergic to collar

Is it possible for Roxy to be allergic to her collar? I used to wear a certain collar on her and just on the front of her neck it would almost rub it raw. But on no other places. I thought it was too tight but loosening it didn't help. I think it was actually the metal ring that held the tags. I don't wear a collar on her now unless we are going somewhere. Her neck is healed, but now as soon as I grab her collar she goes crazy! LOL :)

I just wondered if anyone else ever had this problem. Thanks!

That DOES sound like an allergy. The only other thing I can think of is the friction of the collar rubbing on the neck causes the hair to fall out. If you use a metal collar, they could be allergic to the Nickel in the metal. I don't know if this would work for dogs, nor if it is really practical, but my friend who is allergic to metal always paints clear nail polish on her metal jewlery to create a barrier between her skin and the metal. This really works well. But like I said, I'm not so sure it is practical to paint an entire collar :)

Thanks! I thought about the clear nail polish thing. The collar is a fabric collar with just a metal ring. We quit using that collar a few wks ago. Now we have a really pretty one. Her neck seems to be fine now. I just didn't understand what was wrong before.

I am sadly one of those girls allergic to metal, yes, even gold... very sad. I even get rashes from wearing rings! :( I also use the clear nail polish method. I got my ears pierced when I was 7 and I had to go to the ER for the infection. Yugggghhhh! Enough about me,
Loki also had the front of his neck all raw & red from his collar, but I think it was the friction not an allergy. Boxers have those flabby necks so it was tight when he'd relax and loose when he was running around. Now he doesn't where a collar except for when we go out on his walks. I just leave his collar attached to his leash. He doesn't wear a collar when he is in the house. (((((he is microchipped though)))))
I did buy him a great fleece-lined collar just to keep him comfy for when we go out of town. During the holidays Loki comes with me to visit my fam in NY & NJ. I keep that one on him when we are away from home. It is soft on his neck and keeps his tags visible. The one I have is made by Planet Dog. It is very soft, cozy, and strong.

So, its not just Roxy! Great! I thought she was just different! LOL It probably was the friction, makes sense! Thanks!

Clarice is allergic to beef so and she can't wear leather collars. Her hair falls out and she gets bumps on her neck. I switched her over to a hemp collar which are supposed to be hypo-allergenic to almost all dogs.

Koda is allergic to the nylon collars. He gets bumps all over his neck. We had to go to a rolled leather collar. Took us forever to get his neck cleared up. Now he only wears his collar when we are out and about.

Good luck!

I never leave the collar on anyway..I heard too many horror stories from the vet about them hanging themselves on the tops of fences...now they get really excited when they see the collar because they know it time to byebye!:D

Well actually my Brandy is allergic to them as well, she never wears them while she is in the house with us, but if it is time to leave somewhere she will run and grab it herself (she just loves going "bye-bye") I think everything will be fine if the time she actually wears the collar is limited.

So, I guess Roxy isn't the only one! She loves to go buh-bye too! As soon as she sees her collar or what we call it - her necklace - she goes nuts. Her whole body waggles! LOL I love that!
