Allergic Reactions

Does anyone have a problem with allergic reactions [ie bee stings, spider bites, etc.]. Porter got bit by something [not sure what it was] but his face swelled up and he has huge welts all over his body. His face is very itchy because he is nuzzling it wherever he can get some relief [sofa, pillows, my legs, etc.] We gave him 2 children's Benadryls [okayed by our vet] and now we are off to the vet. He was bit as an 8-week old pup and his whole little body had welts not to mention he was frantic and zooming all over with the itch. The vet administered a shot of cordisone @ that time. Anyone have any similar problems and any solutions other than watching them every second [an impossible task] so they don't poke their noses where they don't belong???

AWWWW poor Porter!! My Boxer Molly that passed away used to do the same darn thing! I almost wanted to ask my vet if she could just move in with me so I wouldn't have to call all the time. LOL. Her whole face would just swell (eyes shut and all) it was just awful. Cortisone shots were a god sent. I don't have any tips because half the time Molly wasn't even looking for trouble it just always found her. I feel for Porter though and I hope he feels better soon :(

That is so weird. This just happened to bailey like 2 weeks ago. I had her in the yard and when I brought her in she just wasn't acting like her wiggley squiggley self. OK no need to panic. Then I noticed she had little puffs of fur sticking up all over her self and she was laying on the floor shivering (PANIC TIME). I called the vet and they said to bring her in right away cause she had hives!! Go figure, Before this I never ever heard of a dog getting hives. Here she either got bit by something or it could have possibly been the carpet shampoo, I don't think it was that because we had used it before, but the vet said she could have built up the reaction to it or something. Not sure (needless to say next time I shampoo, I will leave her outside for the day or something.) Any way the vet gave her two shots of something, And a prescription for some pill (only if she needed it and I could also give her benedryl if she was still pretty bad in the morning. But with in an hour of the shots she was fine. No need for the prescription or benedryl. Scared the daylights out of me. If it was from the carpet shampoo I can keep her away. As for bee's and mosquitos I don't know. I think there is some kind of meds that you can give to try and prevent it but I am not sure. My vet said that Boxers seem suseptable (SP?) to this kind of thing.

Hi ,
Around a month ago we were out on a walk out the wood our usual walk and Naz got stung by a bee it limped on the way home but i thought he would be ok. After a hour he came up to me and his whole face was swollen up i took a photo of him to show hubby cause he was away and took him straight to the vets he had a anti histamine jab and he was fine after a hour or two. He reallly worried me but im glad ive got boxerworld cause other boxers have been through it too and its nice to known that you are not on your own!!!!!!!!

I think that has probably happened to atleast 75% of the people on this board. The benadryl works wonders.

You're lucky he was not atally allergic- some dogs stop breathing as part of the reaction-- try putting a dab of citronella or some other mild, non toxic anti-bug remedy on the top of his head to help keep those stinging bugs away.....

Actually I think he was having trouble breathing. He was panting and foaming and then he vomited. My major concern was bronchial swelling. His face was so swollen and he was laden with welts all over his body. He was frantic with the itching.

The vet gave him a shot of prednisone and prescribed pills. Considering how the welts did not subside within two hours, we had to give him a full pill. Although the vet said not to feed him, he went over and ate what was in his breakfast bowl. He is sleeping restfully and the welts come and go.....it's so weird.....he begins to pant and then the welts appear again! I guess it will be this way until the medication takes total hold of the condition. We are having an exterminator spray [non-toxic, of course} this afternoon! I'm a little freaked about this now!

I hope Porter is feeling better soon. It is definately a Boxer thing. My boxer had this happen twice. It is very scary. She had a terrible reaction both times had to get a shot and pills. It is impossible to watch their every move. I am surprised bees are still out since I saw a yellowjacket yesterday. I do keep benadryl pills in the house just in case. You should check with a vet for proper dosage but I thought it was (1) 25mg pill per 25 lbs.? I get so nervous if I am out with her and see a bee, I bring her in fast. Hopefully it will never happen again.
