Boxer Pal
My puppy recently got a runny nose and sounds congested and has red bumps she's really whiney and can't lay still...we brought her to the vet they said allergic reaction and gave her an antibiotic shot and steroids but tonight she is the same again...anyone else have a different theory? She is fully vaccinated

I'm not sure about the runny nose and congestion but red bumps and being whiny/uncomfortable could be signs of an allergic reaction. The steroid shot will wear off after a bit so I wouldn't be surprised about the symptoms returning after a while, the problem though is that unless you find out what's causing the allergic reaction and deal with that then the symptoms will keep coming back as soon as all the meds wear off. Steroids are very hard on the immune system too and should only be used as a last-resort type thing and for emergencies. I'm also not sure why the vet gave your pup antibiotics  they won't do anything unless she has a bacterial infection (and just like steroids, antibiotics should only be used when absolutely necessary because of the impact they can have on the immune system).

I would suggest you take your puppy to a different vet and tell them that you are looking to find out what's wrong with your pup, and don't settle for the "one-size-fits-all" treatment of antibiotics and steroids. If the vet really does believe it to be allergies then he/she can recommend a good antihistamine and that should do the job just as well without all the nasty side effects that come with steroids.

There are some things that you can do at home too, if you think she may have a contact allergy you need to reduce the possible irritants that she is exposed to. Don't use carpet powders or sprays, minimize use of harsh household chemicals (cleaners, air fresheners, deodorizers, laundry detergents and fabric softeners, etc.), especially those with added fragrance and/or dye. You may need to rewash her bedding, clean the carpets and floors, etc. to remove whatever product has been used on them. You'll also need to bathe your puppy in a very gentle shampoo made just for puppies.

Hope that helps, let us know how she's doing.
