Allergic (?) reaction to holistic treatment

Hi all,

I just wanted to know if anyone had ever had their baby have a bad reaction to a holistic treatment? I've taken Charm to a holistic vet for a second opinion on a skin problem and he prescribed some things to boost her immune system plus some things to cleanse her after the bad reaction she had to the lepto vaccine. I gave her three of the meds the other day and her gums got very pale and she threw up. This reaction was very similar to the one she had to the lepto vac. She didn't lose coordination or have difficulty breathing so I just watched her and she recovered in a few hours. The vet had me stop everything but now I'm afraid to give her any kind of medicine at all. Does anyone have any insight? I don't think this was just a case of detox and neither does the vet.

I can't say that's something I've ever heard of specifically. But technically, it is possible for a dog (or a person) to be allergic to absolutely anything. Clearly that can include any form of medicine. And all forms of medicine have the occassional contraindication.

By meds do you mean homeopathic remedies? If so, it quite possibly is a reaction to one of those. Homeopathic remedies are "proved" by giving them to healthy individuals, and noting what symptoms they cause. Once proved, they are given at lower doses to individuals displaying those symptoms - "similar cures similar". If the remedy is not the correct one, or at too high of a potency, it may cause the symptoms. So, if for example you give Apis, and it was the wrong remedy/dose, you might see facial swelling. (On the other hand, if you give Apis to a dog that had facial swelling, and it was the correct remedy/dose, you'd see the swelling decrease.)

Yes Julie, I did mean remedy. Sorry. I gave her one dose of Thuja and she seemed fine if not a little hyper and possibly elevated temp. But that is just from feel, not an actual measurement. I would have to look again to see exactly what the other remedies were that we tried. However, if like cures like what could the vet have possibly given us that would have caused the pale membranes?? And we weren't trying to treat her for nausea so I don't understand the upset stomach unless the remedies were too strong and her system was trying to purge itself. I'm so new to this and I want her to be well that I feel like a mad scientist sometimes. I worry so that she will have a bad reaction and I'll lose her. I just want her to be better.

The holistic vet gave Avra Thuja for the vaccines and nux vomica for her "head shake"problem.The first week it was a drama,she was almost red and she often shaked her head.She was displaying all the symptoms.
Our holistic vet told me that this is a right reaction to remedy.She had the reaction only at the first time that she took the nux vomica,which lasted one week.
I give her one nux vomica per month and the last two months she had no reaction.
