Hello,

Logan just turned one last week, he weights b/n 55 & 60...
he is flying on a plane for the first time this coming wednesday....

logan is normally freaked out by a motorcycle, so im sure a jet engine wont be too good for him...

so i have decided to sedate him for the trip...i have been told 1mg/lb of body weight of childrens benadryl is good enough to sedate them for a trip..

does anyone have experience/suggestions/recommendations for this? would an rx be better? should i go with benadryl? is 1mg/lb enough?

ps, im flying him in an fcc approved crate that isnt too big, but gives him enough room, im fasting him starting 5pm the previous night, and i am going to put 2 or 3 of his babies in with him(stuffed animals).

any info is GREATLY appreciated,

Mikey

Sedating is not recommended. You don't know what their reaction is going to be and if they wake up they would be really scared and might freak out. It is usually much better if they are aware of what is happening.

Benadryl can sometimes cause dogs to be hyperactive!

Do not sedate your dog. You could kill him. And do not "fast" him the day before. He can become sick if you make him go an entire day without eating.

Feed him a normal dinner. If flying out very early in the morning, then skip breakfast. If flying later in the morning, give him a small breakfast and potty him before you leave.

Give him water before you leave since you don't want him to dehydrate. Make sure he has a nice padded crate pad to keep him comfy.

Write his name, your name, your address and your phone # on the crate. With a Sharpie marker preferably.

I always freeze water in both of the required containers attached to the door. That way they can have a drink if they get thirsty. Instead of trying to sedate him, why don't you get some of the natural calming agents. One I use is called Tranquil and is NOT a tranquilizer. It is made of several different ingredients like valarian root, passion flower and lots others. Rescue Remedy might help also. You can get it a Health Food Stores.
