Agility Just for Fun??

I'm just finishing up basic obedience with Trixie. I was wondering if anyone else signs their dogs up for other classes like agility and higher levels of obedience "just for fun?"

I feel silly asking if I should sign Trixie up for classes the same way other people sign their children up for gymnastics, dance lessons, and t-ball, but I'm really curious if other people do it for "fun."

I have this notion that people only sign their dogs up for this if they're prepping for competition, but I wanted to know if people do it just for fun too.

The truth of the matter is, I LOVE OBEDIENCE class and Trixie loves it too... so what could it hurt to go further, right?! ?

Just Do It

I think 'just for fun' is the very best reason of all to go on to agility or higher levels of obedience. Even though we do compete in both the only reason we do is that our Boxers love it, Even if we never competed we would continue with classes. We have lots of people at the clubs we belong to who will never compete but still just enjoy the social side of things and the fact their dogs have a great time. Trixie is sure lucky to have a family who wants to do the things she loves

By all means do it just for fun. Your boxer will love you for it. You may find that you like it so much you will want to go in some competitions. You don't have to be all that serious about it.

Me and Bailey started agility about a month ago and we do it for fun. She loves going and we both have fun. It's something for me and her to do together. Boxer's are great at jumping, and at class she gets treat for jumping and running fast. she love it.

Everyone who does Agility or Obedience should do it for fun !!!!
It is most important for you and your dog to enjoy what sport
you compete in together. I could not believe in myself if I did
Agility and Obedience for anything else other than great mind
blowing fun. Mind you not every Boxer does great Obedience,

I have been showing Gypsy in conformation for about a year now and she really does love it however i introduced her to some obiedence and agility over this past week and she went nuts, I dont think i ever seen her have more fun and she caught on to everthing we showed her in about 15 min even jumping through the tire. We were so proud of her I think we will only show conformation when my daughter shows her in Juniors , We are going for the obiedence and agility and it will be fun for all of us.

I must admit we go to classes for fun. We like the trainer and at the junior level which we are at we have met a lot of other great owners. I look forward to Thursday night when the whole family goes to puppy school. Bru and Amaya are both in the same class now so I take one dog and hubby takes the other.

Junior is pretty hard and we work alot off leash. I don't really want super dogs but we would all miss school. Last night we took a poll and when class ends we all want to start agility so the trainer agreed to run a class for us I am so excited!!! What fun we will have :D

Yes!!! Yes!!! Yes!!! Do it for the fun of it!!! That is the best reason of all!!! I have a boxer-mix and we just finished our first agility class!! She and I both absolutely love it.

My trainer told me that my boxer-mix looks so much like a real boxer I could probably get an ILP # to get her into AKC competitions and I will probably do that. But even if she doesn't pass muster, we will continue to go because we love it so much!!

And I have to agree with Jamie1070, Boxers are great at jumping. I have had a another owner in our class tell me over and over how much she enjoys just watching Ripley jump (because she doesn't just jump, she soars). And to be honest, I have to admit, I never tire of watching it either.

I'm going to pretend I didn't hear that....

There are agility trails offered by organizations other than the AKC. The NADAC and the USDAA both accept mixed-breed dogs. Some good links on agility (including the websites for the above organizations) are here:

JulieM, Thanks for the info and the resource site I was unaware about all the other possibities for mixes. I wouldn't want to lead anyone astray, but like I said before it is not the competition that I am looking for--just the fun!!!
