Hello,

We have a beautiful 1 year old female brindle boxer. She is a wonderful sweetheart. The problem lately though is she has started to become aggressive towards other dogs at the dog park. This doesn't happen all the time. She will run and play but will try to be dominant towards some dogs and when they become scared and start to nip back at her she will pin them to the ground and growl at them. She hasn't harmed any of them but the other day there was a 3 month old border collie that absolutely loved her, yet when he tried to play she would wrestle with him for a short period and then pin him down. He becomes scared and runs for his owner with is tail between his legs. All be it, he will shortly come back for more two minutes later. Should I be worried about this. She has always been very protective of my husband and I when other dogs are around but we have always put a stop to it by having one of us hold her while the other pets the new dog until she relaxes and then the one petting the other dog will start to pet both of them. She responds fairly well with that. Until they come between her and us again then she will do it again. Any help with this would be appreciated. Thank you. We are first time boxer owners.

What you are describing isn't necessarily 'aggression' it could be crazy, rough boxer play. A good clue (sometimes) is how the other dogs respond. The fact that she doesn't chase after the pup and he is able to get away and then comes back shows that she doesn't really want to hurt him. But without seenig it for myself it's hard to say. I would hire a trusted dog trainer/behaviorist to come with you to the park with you one day and tell you how to read her body language and the body language of the other dogs.

Thanks srennie. She does chase after the pup but will come when I call her. She doesn't seem to be too concerned until he comes between us. Then she will come running up and growl at him and try to jump on him and pin him. She does this with other dogs too. I am not too concerned but just wondering what I should watch for so as to not have a problem later on.
