Age limit on crate training?

My landlord and his wife have a male boxer that is about 5 yrs old. They are getting old and have just moved into a small apartment and can no longer keep the dog. We have offered to take him, so they are going to bring him over to see how he interacts with Spice. The problem is that they kept him outside in their backyard. (Go figure) Is the dog to old to be crate trained and any tips on how to get him socialized with another dog (female at that)?

First I would suggest that you introduce the two on neutral territory. As for crate training a 5 year old, I think it can be done, you just have to make the crate a great place to be from day one. Leave the door open at all times and put treats and toys in there so when he goes in there to see what is waiting for him it's all good things.
