We got our ABSOLUTELY BEAUTIFUL 11-week-old flashy fawn female today. Her ears were cropped yesterday - we have been given conflicting advice as to how to care for the incisions and sutures on her ears. One person says iodine and an antibiotic powder - another says to rub Neosporin on the edges of the eras. Any advice from the knowledgeable members of this board?
Aftercare for cropped ears?

I am not sure just where I fit into the "Knowledgable" category, but I can speak from past experience with good results. I used Neosporin and it worked well. I would think should you use iodine and there is still some open raw spots, it would really sting your poor little girl. Not to mention, an antibiotic powder, in my opinion, could leave a powder residue that may lead to problems. So my vote is the neosporin, (and some airtime as well)

Neosporin is fine for healing, but what I found that works much better through cropping is Desitin cream. The anti itch stuff for baby rashes. Its safe enough to use on cuts and stuff and it stops the itching and helps with healing. That really helps to keep them from taking those stitches out...that's the worst. Also I'm sure they told you to keep your dog excercizing its ears constantly. Use a squeeky toy or we got one of those lazer lights with Sayde Lynn and she would follow the light around barking and jumping at it and the whole time her ears were straight up. Just keep her from scratching and she will be fine. And congradulations on your new addition! Boxer slurps and wiggles from Ram Man and Lexus!

Once the stitches were removed we only did the taping (using the tampon tubes and tape like jrhodes) However, until the stitches were removed we did use the neosporin to keep it from getting itchy and to prevent infections.

With Cayenne we used neosporin and and destin. She loves to scratch and after the stitches came out she had a place where she scratched too much. Everyday I would spend some extra time and lightly scratch some of the areas on the base of her ears that I didn't want her too. It seemed to help her get over the itchiness and was a good bonding moment. I also spent some time massaging the tips of the ears. I didn't have to use anything but tape on my furbabies ears. I have pictures in my gallery. I am relatively new to this experience and lucked out with an excellent vet and a great breeder to help me get over some of my fears. But we had no problems and her ears look wonderful. She is such a pretty lady.
