I've decided to switch to a raw/cooked diet. Recently I've been cooking chicken breast but feeding raw steak meat. I wanted to mix it up and switch the diet over gradually. I've only fed sweet potato, carrots, and spinach. What other veggie's can I feed? I know I need to incorporate bones as well but I haven't built up the confidence yet. I was thinking about buying the Aunt Jeni's mixture. Any adive would be great

You really need the bone for balance. If you can't stomach the bones then I would stick to grinding them or using an alternative until you are. Although it's really not as gross as you think and I actually get such pleasure in hearing them crunch their food, because I know its what they were meant to eat. ;) Anywho - Chicken backs are great - or another great way to feed is buy a whole chicken and feed parts of that over a few days. Turkey, pork, fish, lamb, ox tails are all on my menu.

I don't feed veggies, nothing has convinced me that they need them yet. ;)

Aunt Jeni's is pretty $$$ if you ask me...I wouldn't pay that much.

My concern is not getting enough nutrients and I guess that why I felt it was necessary to feet veggies. I know you can buy tons of supplements but what I read in the AUNT JENI's site was it was fortified enough that there was no need for additional supplements. I really love the idea of the raw diet I think I'm just scarred I'm not going to do it right and affect my dogs health. My husband is all about the idea too. We love seeing what we are feeding out dog. Are meat bones a good idea too? Or mainley chicken? I got a book called "Switching to Raw" and it shows a calendar which mixes up RMB, Organs, Veggies, and muscle meat. But if I do mainly RMB and veggies do I still need to buy supplements? This is a great diet but a hard one. Or maybe I'm just making it hard?

You are probably making it too difficult. Veggies and supplements are not necessary. Lots of variety of raw meaty bones along with the offal of the animal is all that is necessary. You need to make sure that they get lots of bone though and they have to be fairly soft ones like poultry and some pork bones are good. You can start out just feeding chicken and then gradually start adding in more variety.

Good luck!

Weird Question

Is it ok to kiss your boxer after it ate raw food? I kiss Abbie straight on her lips but after watching her eat that raw chicken back today I'm not too sure about it. Should I wipe her mouth with a rag? Or just leave it as it?

This is an animal that licks their butts and kisses you, too. ;) I usually don't worry about it, unless their mouths are REAL messy.

Keep it simple in my view.

Mine get primarily chicken/turkey portions (bones included) - raw or slightly frozen.

They also get lamb/beef mince - raw.

Every few days they get:
Sardines and pilchards from the tin.

Eggs.

Lamb and pig kidneys/livers.

Why make it difficult for yourself.

I keep it pretty basic too. Mine mainly gets chicken necks, gizzards, livers, thighs, drumsticks, wings, ground chicken and turkey, and eggs. Every now and then he will get some salmon, pork, beef, beef heart, beef liver, and thats about it.

I wouldn't bother cooking anything, I would feed all raw.

Mine get pork necks, lamb necks, beef mix, beef tripe, and on occassion they get beef liver, heart & kidneys. I also give them fish once in a while. I bought whole frozen salmon on sale from the store and cut them up. They loved it but it may have upset their tummies as their stools were a bit runny.

Luke is allergic to all poultry :( but I am going to start feeding turkey or chicken necks to Leia (it will help pad the wallet a touch more!)

BTW - After they eat, I wipe their faces (and sometimes their whole body) with a warm wet face cloth. I only give kisses about 1 hour after food. I just feel weird about it after they eat....but that's just me:)

Its alot like determining allergies in a human diet (except they can't talk to you)
It was actually alot of work and took a long time. He wasn't always allergic to poultry. It started about 1 year or so (can't remember exactly) after we switched to raw. He started to develop bumps on his paws (I guess you would say in between his toes and under his pads). We tried everything and couldn't figure it out. It was hard for us to figure it out b/c we had to wait until his feet were completely healed. What we did was we put him on 1 food source for about a month (no supplements or additions, just the meat). Then changed it to a different food source for about 1 month and then another, etc until we tried all food sources. Then one day we fed him chicken and his back broke out in little hives. We tried it again a few more times to make sure it was definently the food. Sure enough he turned out to be allergic to chicken. So we put him back on pork & lamb only. Then one day I decided to get turkey (thinking it was ok) and yep same thing .... bumps. Ok and then another time I tried duck. Yep hives:(

Its really too bad b/c he loves the chicken and turkey so much! We even thought it may have been just the skin or the fat and took all that off too!
