I feel your pain!

My 3 yr old female boxer just went through everything you said in your post. Vet put her on the same 2 meds and started to work, but it took at least 2wks for it to even begin to heal her scratched open wounds. Finished her meds and looked to be cleared up but not even 1 wk later it was back. We then discovered that it had not been allergies at all. It was her collar, she must be allergic to leather. The minute we took that collar off of her she stopped scratching and started to heal within a month.
One other thing you have to watch out for are the plants that your wife has. I know there is a specific plant that is highly poisonous to dogs. I am not the greatest of spellers, but its something like a Hosta bush. Get rid of them! Do not let your dog eat the leaves!
Hope your dog gets better!

Hi we had the same problems our poor boxer was chewing himself so bad we would wake up with him every couple of hours to help him get thru it. Well we went to his vet and she said he had hives and allergies and it could take months to figure them out.....we could not accept that we knew there was something we could do to make him comfortable. We went to another vet who said the same thing possible outside allergies as well as food allergies. He had been put on antihistamines, cephalaxin and prednisone and special Royal Canin food. Well we went to a third vet who recommended we see a dermatologist. We made the appointment and he took one look at our baby and said he actually had a yeast infection. It is caused by different things but anyway the dermatologist was 350.00 for one hour and well worth it. He put Rocky on duck and potatoes and 3 different medicines to kill his infection. Rocky had what the first two vets thought were hives but was actually his yeast infection also known as folliculitis. It sounds worse than it really is. The dermatologist said that he was biting at his paws so bad because it is sort of like athletes foot so imagine the itchiness. Anyway, it turns out that the medicine the first vet put him on was also cephaxilin which apparently is an antibiotic and just like when a woman takes antibiotics she can develop yeast so can dogs. Anyway I hope this helps you. Also, we bought him a natural spray called veterinarians best hot spot itch relief spray (petsmart)we sprayed him really good where he itched and I swear it was a life saver. Theres more to the story but my post it too long anyway. Feel free to contact. If I were you I would put my dog on a special diet and NO treats. Our Rockys dermatologist said that even if a dog has food allergies they can more or less have any fruit or veggie so dont feel bad about taking away treats. Take care
