Need some guidance. My husband and I are thinking of getting another boxer -- another male. We were just wondering if anyone who has two males could offer any advice or let us know how theirs get along. We have been hearing mixed views on having two males and want to make sure we are making the right decision.

Thanks!

In our situation it has worked out well. (knock on wood) Cody is 10 and we brought home Duke almost 5 months ago. Cody was a spoiled rotten, only dog for many years. He does not like other big dogs so we were very nervous. Duke was a puppy when we brought him home. At first it was very tough on Cody but we spent a lot of one on one time with Cody. We introduced them on neutral territory which I really think helped. Now they are the best of friends!! Duke is starting to become stronger than Cody which makes me sad, (for Cody's sake) but Cody is definitly the alpha. They are so cute together.

Yes, I also hear mixed reviews on two males. Luckily it has worked out for us. Duke panics when he cannot find Cody and Cody does the same thing.

Good Luck, let me know what you decide!

I have two males and a female and they all get along nicely. The oldest male is 11 years old and the other male is 2yrs old. We have never had a problem with either one of them.

I originally planned on getting a female companion for my boy Riley, but in the end we brought Mason home. Riley was just over a year old when Mason came home at eight weeks of age. They've been together for a little bit over a year now and they've been great together. They're always entertaining each other and they like to sleep side by side from time to time.

The only thing that I can really think of right now that we've had problems with is when they have the occasional 'argument' over a toy or a treat. These 'arguments' have never gotten any further than muffled growling, but we have learned to feed them at opposite sides of the room and I'm always there supervising until they're both finished eating. I also supervise them when they have treats and toys.

So, having two males in my situation has been working out very well so far. I think a lot of it has to do with the individual dogs and the owner's ability to handle certain situations.

How old your current male?? Are you planning on getting an adult or a puppy??

From talking with our breeder, she said that two males can get along, but she was talking about two "fixed" males. She said that two females can be unpredictable together, and that most often the most reliable combination is a male and a female (both fixed). Obviously, this is a generalization - but hope it helps.

I have several males ranging from 9 years then to 3@4.5 and 1almost 4. One of the 4.5 year olds is not altered nor is the 4 year old. With these I have had a few issues. Max (4.5) is the sweetest most submissive that I have but his half sybling (after he turned 3 years of age) started trying to be the dominant. Now Zeplin (@4 the youngest male in my crew) is the dominant boy and can no longer be placed with other males. His mother is also the alpha of my pack.

I think a lot may depend on the personality, if it is altered would be a tremendous plus but in general (long term) opposite sexs usually do best. All of my girls do well together. All of my crew has grown up together but I do have more male issues (males being together) than I do of opposite sex or girl issues.

Good Luck in your decision! The only advise I can give would be if you decide to go with two males learn to read body language just in case and be prepared if that one day they decide they are no longer friends. Zeplin and Max played together for 3 years and then it was like over night that Zeplin had a change of heart.

Murray is 2.5 years old. We are planning on getting a puppy. We both want to get another male but because we have been hearing mixed stories, I've been getting really nervous. Murray is neutered and we would definitely neuter the new puppy too.

Thanks for the advice everyone. I'll be sure to let you know what we decide.

It's a wonderful experience for me but I did it the easy way, I adopted an adult so I knew both of their adult personalities!
Tulley and Desi get along terrifically, my third rescue is a female and they are wonderful together.

We've had many calls for dogs coming into rescue because as they grew they tried to take the unavailable alpha position but I had it easy knowing the personalities of both already. Desi is a perfect gentleman ALL the time, he was so easy to add to my "pack". He was about four when we adopted him. I think it helps that both boys were neutered young (I adopted Tulley young and had him done before 6 months and Desi has indications of having been neutered young also.)

I have two males and one female. Of course one male and the female are MinPins. I used to foster and would usually only take in females because I was worried about my male getting along with another male. But after getting Simba my boxer I've realized that my little male is fine with him. But Simba doesn't mind not being the alpha dog. It maybe different with another male. I think it depends on personality. I'm not sure this helps any but I thought I'd share.
Good luck in your decision!

Hope in whatever you decide it works out!

Two males

I have two have male boxers the same age, 1-1/2 yrs. They get along great, they have settled into their roles naturally. Frasier the larger of the two is the alpha, Ali doesn't seem to have a problem with it. Every now and then they will get annoyed with each other and box with their mouths opened making this awful noise, but they do not growl or bare teeth towards each other. My biggest problem was getting them to listen to me and not to each other.
