Boxer Insane
My friend and her live in BF have a male Boxer (BF's) unneutered just over 2 years of age. They also have a beagle/basset mix, (hers) male neutered about the same age.
They are left uncrated and "usually" do fine but lately there have been a couple of instances that have resulted in a leather chair and couch being torn to shreds. The first incident was with the chair. After suggesting that they should try and see if anything was in the chair that either dog was after, a treat was found and that sorta put an end to the reasons why this happened.
I should also say that on this particular occasion in her own words that both dogs got their butts beat......they are of the mind set that the dogs do these things because they are mad at the parents for leaving and want to destroy things to get back at them.
I KNOW that this is not the case and have told them so countless times and it does no good. I have let it be known that I don't think that hitting a dog is allowed in any situation.....this falls on deaf ears.
Another trip away lead to them coming home to the entire back part of the couch being shreaded.....same results from the owners......same story from me.
Today I get a call in the AM. This time a cushion from the couch was destroyed, so much so that both chair and couch will have to be replaced.
I gave the whole story about them not doing this on purpose but that it seems as if they are just bored and trying to find something to do. They are not allowed to have any toys or bones to play/chew with because the beagal/basset has "supposedly" object aggression. If something is introduced to them to play with the smaller dog will try and bite the Boxer claimning the item as his. That's a whole other story in itself that I have gone over with her countless times.....again to no avail.
So, today I get the story that it HAD to be the Boxer that did it because as soon as they come home he was acting very guilty. Nub held down, ears held back.
HELLO!!! I tried to explain that even if he did do it he was not reacting out of guilt. He was reacting to the fact that whenever the two parents come home together that the dogs get the s@%! beat out of them. They are getting used to the behavior and associating it with their return....not the fact that they had some fun by inventing a toy of their own, knew that what they were doing was wrong and were going to get in trouble for that particular act.
I have tried explaining that animals don't think like humans do. They don't try and manipulate us (well sometimes for biscuits) but they are dogs and dogs like to chew and play. And if this isn't something that we provide for them they will instinctually provide it for themselves.
I have suggested first that they should never harm the dogs. I have suggested toys, playtime, walks, crating etc.....What else can I offer. They are both wonderful dogs. The Boxer is the most mild manner Boxer that I have ever met. He is a lovebug, he doesn't even require a leash when away from home. He minds way better than my girl does, who by the way has NEVER once destroyed anything in my home and has never been hit or even yelled at.
There has to be a way to get through to them I have even offerred her my Boxer books. What else can I offer? How else might I go about getting thru?
Please don't tell me to call animal control on them. It is not my fault that they are bad dog owners. Having the animals taken away will only cause harm to all involved. Besides there is no proof that any of this has ocourred.
I want to educate, have them stop this behavior and learn from their mistakes. I don't want to stop trying to help these boys.
I just thought that a few others might have better ways for me to get the point across. I am of the same opinion as the majority of you. I don't think that what they are doing is right. It is terrible of them to treat these animals this way. Help me help them.
I also explained that if a Boxer actually held a grudge and wanted to so call it "get even" with them for leaving then a Boxer is literally quite capable of doing significant bodily harm to either of them. But so far has chosen not to do this. I guess that secretly I hoped that he would at least take a small nip out of his dad.....terrible to think much less say....wishful thinking I suppose.
