Adult Crate Training

Boxer Pal
I'm a new boxer owner and am hoping for some advice. I recently adopted a 2 yr. old female who is an absolute joy!

... Now for the problem. My husband just brought home a 2nd boxer. It is a 6 yr. old male who was scheduled to be put down. I can already tell this 2nd dog is definitely going to be more of a challenge, but I'm confident that with time and patience I can work through most of those problems. My immediate problem is that he is a championship fence jumper !! He can clear a 6' fence in a single leap.

Unfortunately, due to CC&R restrictions, modifying the fence is not an option. Obviously I will work with correction and training ... But that's going to take time. My husband already wants to give up (after only a couple of days) and send him back to the shelter, but I will not do that.

The most immediate solution I can think of is to try crating him during the day. Does anyone have personal experience with crate training an adult? Any advice you can provide will sure be appreciated.

We had the same problem with our 5 yr adopted female. Crating during the day is what we did and she hasn't been over since.

I crate trained a 1.5-2 year old (rescue) and he was fine. He was tearing up couches. We were eventually able to leave him out.

I am currently working with my 4 year old foster to crate train her. At first she did not like the crate and we had to carry her to it and push her in. Once she was in we would praise her like crazy and then give her a treat. We've had her abour 1 1/2 weeks and she is now going in with only a little guidance and no longer running into the other room at the work kennel :)

We are lucky that she doesnt seem to have any issues once shes in the crate but I think it just takes some patience and time. She has actually been easier than Bru and Amaya who we started with as puppies.

Fence jumping

I have had several fence jumpers, what a challenge. I know you mentioned fence codes in your neighborhood but- at tractor supply type stores you can buy a hot box for dog fences for about 25.00 and then of course hot wire and conectors. believe me it will only take 1 or 2 times if really stubborn dog. and they wont even jump on fence. You could unplug fence when your not out with the dog, therefore not dangerous to kids etc.... and the dog of course will not know it. I just left mine up. my dog use to jump the fence to kill my chickens, not a good thing, she thought differently! If this isn't an option, Iam sure your loving home with a little crate time is just fine with him. but if it comes to takeing him back, please contact a rescue league before the shelter, he will have a much better chance of getting a good home. Good luck.
