Adding a 2nd boxer to the family: pros/cons

Otis-No!

My wife and I are toying with the idea of adding a female boxer to the family. Possibly a rescue or puppy. We currently have a 3 yr old male(fixed) who runs the house and is spoiled rotten as I am sure most of you can relate. What are the pros/cons of doing this? We want to do this for a few reasons. Playpal for Otis. We love boxers and just think another one would be great. Hoping to use things we learned raising Otis on the new puppy.
We would crate train a puppy and worry how Otis would react to the puppy in the crate when we are not home. A house broken rescue dog would solve this problem if we go that route. Of course we worry that Otis would be jealous or possible not get along with the new dog. If anyone has any experience with a similar situation I would love to get your input. Thanks!

I think Otis would love a playmate, we have three babies, we always have at least two, they become the very best of friends. I think it's all personal choice, puppies are wonderful if you have the time to give them and train them and all, but, there's nothing like a rescue babie!!! A female would probably work well for you, or a male either I guess, I always liked having one of each because their little boy/girl personalities are different :) we have two still in crates for a short period during the day, Roxie who is 13 is not crated but it doesn't bother her that her sister and brother are :) I keep their kennels very close to one another. They are so much fun, we love having mulitple dogs, they need that type of interaction I think, even with all three, Mommy and Daddy are still their favorite cuddle toys!! Good luck, go for it!!!

I have Brutus and my foster Fiona and it has been nothing but pros for the two weeks she has been here. They play non-stop and are so busy that they stay out of trouble while they are inside. I say go for the second one. You won't regret it.

I love it. Of course there is never a dull moment in the house now. But it's just so much fun to watch them play together and those few moments that they are relaxing and they snuggle up together, it's just priceless. I can't keep one out of the crate and one in though. They just both sit there and cry. And my female definitely cannot stay in the house unattended. So I put them both in a very large crate and neither of them seem to mind it. They both just run in and lay down.

We just got the second one in DEcember. I've always had more than one dog at the same time but this is the first time having 2 boxers. It's a blast and I would recommend it to anyone who can afford the time and money.

My last boxer before these 2 was a rescue and she was so wonderful I miss her daily. She was well behaved, spayed, obesidence trained, and over all the puppy chewing and little things that can get to you. I also know that without me she would have been put down. She was 7 when I got her and so far had been the absolute best decision I ever made in rescuing a dog. We've had others but none compared to Parker. She lived for another 4 happy spoiled years before going to the bridge.

I just got my girl on Monday night. Zeke was our only child and our everything. He was super spoiled. He loves her very much already. He seems to be helping her learn the ropes like where to potty. He shares his toys and water bowl (they are on different foods- she's on puppy and he is on a prescription diet due to some health issues). They are keeping each other occupied and tire each other out. Currently we are letting Zeke have the run of the laundry room. Bella since she isn't potty trained yet is in a crate when we are not around. Incidently we are starting obedience classes with her tomorow. Zeke doesn't quite understand why she isn't sitting when we say sit. We don't want him to start thinking it is ok to not mind so we are working with her right away. It is fun...but we haven't got much sleep. We are trying to help familiarlize her and get her into a routine.

Thinking of adding also

Even though I haven't had Gracie that long, I ponder getting her a friend. I live in the ideal area for pets, and would love to grow my family. Right now she is so spoiled with love, but I know she gets lonely when I'm gone. My house is small (only 2 bedrooms) but I own 13 acres and am currently looking at fencing options. I live near the ocean, so we have lots of fun.

Please look at rescue options, I will never get a dog another way. It has been the most rewarding expereince ever.

Good luck!!!

more than one is a load of fun!!

2 Boxers are a real hoot to have around and they really wear each other out playing! After our 2 females were rudely taken away by cancer in 2004, we adopted Herbie from our local rescue. Now 6 months later we are going to get him a playmate now that's he's used to us. If you go through a rescue, they will help match your family & Boxer to a playmate. Our rescue requires that the WHOLE family comes to "interview" potential adopted siblings. If it works out for you, try to adopt. You would be shocked to see the beautiful Boxers people throw away........
