Hey everyone,

Cassius is now about 8 1/2 months old now and is developing a nasty case of acne around his mouth. I did a search on here and didn't find much info on this so I'm wondering if anyone can offer any assistance.

It has gotten pretty bad (in my opinion anyway) so I had my wife take him to the vet yesterday. He gave us antibiotics (infected open wounds) and a wash to clean it with daily. Unfortunately I was at work and was not able to talk to the vet, and my wife didn't really ask any questions that I wanted answers to, such as is this just a stage that he will grow out of? What can I do to prevent it occuring? Should I pop those nasty puss balls or just let them heal on their own??

If anyone has any wisdom on this that they could share I would greatly appriciate it!!

Thanks!
Al and Cassius

I've heard of dogs getting pimples on their mouth from plastic bowls. Maybe you should give your vet a call and just ask him.

Using metal bowls can help acne. You have to wash them in the dishwasher to make sure they don't have residue left on them. I always pop the zits. The vets where I work usually pop the zits on cats with acne, but I don't think that I've seen any dogs come in with it (other than my dog whose zits were already popped). I usually clean my dogs chin with my own astringent (it seems to work the best for him and he is very sensitive), and use the cream I got from the vet that has benzoyl peroxide in it. That always clears it up if he gets a break out. My dog usually gets acne from allergies (usually food), or stress. He's around 3-4 yrs. old.

My Ginger has them too. I'll try to change bowles and wash it more daily to see if that helps. Are there and 'over the counter' creams i can buy?

The ingredient in the acne cream I got is benzoyl peroxide 5%, so any people acne cream should work. I think clearasil is only 2%. The directions on my tube (Oxydex Gel) are: Apply once or twice daily to affected areas. Cleanse areas prior to treatment to enhance effect. Use only sufficient medicine as to impart a thin invisible film over the entire lesion. Rub in well so that no excess medication is visible on hair or surrounding areas. Prevent pet from licking treated areas until gel has dried (1-2minutes).

Hi, you may have your acne problem under control now, but just wanted to let you in on how we handled it. Our girl had acne really bad when she was about 6mo. old. When we took her in to be spayed the vet told us that alot of it is caused by ingrown hairs, especially under the chin where the hair is so short. And as everyone said, the use of plastic bowls, from rubbing against it as they eat. Metal bowls have really helped too!! He recommended stridex pads and gave us a jar of Silvadene cream applied twice daily, which worked really well. The vet popped alot of them when she was under for the surgery. It took a while to clear up, but now she's a year old and is pretty much acne free : )
