When Mugsy was a puppy, the vet gave us 10 mg tablets of Ace to give to him when we went on an 8 hour car trip to visit family. With the luggage, Mugsy had a very small space to lay in so as active as he was, we wanted him to sleep for the trip. It worked fine for that trip and for two other trips over the first two years of his life. Last year, on the return trip from Cincinatti, within an hour of giving it to him, we were stopping for a potty break. Now even on the Ace, a very mellow Mugsy could still get up and go potty. Well, he walked about three feet, and then collapsed with his head at an akward angle and started peeing where he was laying. We couldn't rouse him, his eyes were vacant, not focused. And here we were 8 hours from home!! We carried him back to the car and he slept for the next 2 hours. We tried taking him out again, and he seemed OK, started to go poop, then fell over again, this time shaking like he was having a seizure!! It was the scariest thing I had ever seen. By the time we got home he was coming out of it. I threw that bottle of Ace away and then started reading the research on Acepromazine and boxers. His vet record now had a very large and RED note on never using this on him...now when we go on a car trip, he can just be restless, no more sedatives.
