I just recieved an email from a lady looking for a female to bred her male too. She told me that her male was ACA. She also said that the ACA reg. was not a junk reg. I didn't get into details about the male or health testing or anything like that. I just have never heard of ACA and was wondering is it a good reg? or like ConKC?

Thanks,
Amy

I googled ACA Registry and here is their website: www.acavet.com

It doesn't take much effort to register your dog here, and anyone can do it. From their page:

How do I register my dog with the American Canine Association, Inc.?

Simply fill out your blue and yellow puppy Registration Application Form. Include the name of you dog, the colors of your dog, and the gender of your dog on the front of the form. Then, fill in your personal information, such as name, address, and telephone number.

Sooo, While I'm not saying that there is anything wrong with the ACA Registry itself (maybe it serves some purpose for somebody?) ACA Registered Boxer means nothing in terms of purebred status. It seems like one can put anything they want on the registration form and then they have an "ACA" registered dog ;)

To register you must have a vet check the health and genetics. I do know all about health of boxers and males. It is not like CKC where you can register any dog as any breed you wish.

Yes, but did you read about the so-called "health tests"? ;)

It's no more than a vet-check (which really accomplishes nothing, in terms of genetics). Again, from their site:

How do I health certify my dog?

It’s as easy as 1-2-3, to health certify your dog using the ACA Health Certification Form. First take the form to your veterinarian on any visit. Ask your veterinarian if he or she can check the heart, eyes, and teeth of your dog. If your veterinarian can certify that your dog is free of the genetic defects in those areas, he or she will sign on the appropriate sections of the form. Second, send the completed Health Certification Form to the American Canine Association, Inc. Congratulations on being a responsible dog owner!

Problem is, your vet can't actually certify that your dog is free of genetic defects by such a simple exam. It would certainly be nice if that were the case..

Here's a link which tells you more about actual health tests that should be performed on both sire and dam, prior to breeding. These are the only health tests that should suffice, in my book. "ACA Health Certified" means absolutely nothing.

You cannot take you pet to just any vet to get them certified. People need to do their research other than read something on the internet and post it on this website.

eek, does ACA ask for a pedigree certificate? I'd ask alot of questions and feel comfortable before I agreed.

...no organization is fool proof. I had an AKC registered "black" Boxer years ago-still have the papers somewhere for "Menageries Black Magic"...of course she was spayed very young...Maggie was one of the best looking black and white terrier/Boxer mixed babies I've ever been owned by....don't know if AKC still accepts something as erroneous as that now or not.

Really? It says on their website that you can take the dog to your own vet at any visit for the health "test"

to health certify your dog using the ACA Health Certification Form. First take the form to your veterinarian on any visit.

Nobody should blindly purchase a Boxer that is registered anywhere (AKC or otherwise). You should always ask for the appropriate health testing that I mentioned in my link above www.boxerworld.com/health_testing.

The OP was asking if this is a "good" registry. I assume she is wondering if it offers some reasonable degree of confidence as to whether a Boxer registered here is truly a Boxer. The answer to that is "no" -- anyone can register their dog here. To add to that, to say that your dog is fully health tested through the ACA is highly misleading (and irresponsible).

i agree..i don't think it establishes anything.it most certainly does NOT mean that the dog doesn't have genetic problems just b/c you register with these people.there is a huge difference between the parents being health tested and just taking your dog to the vet for an exam.JMO.
