Bentley (60lb. male) will be 17 months on May 16 and has been doing very well on California Natural Herring & Sweet Potato. We also give him EVO treats and he absolutely loves them.

I'm thinking of switching over to a higher protein food possibly Wellness Core Ocean, Original EVO or EVO Red Meat. I'm leaning toward Core Ocean because the protein is lower than EVO and would be a good transition food into a high protein diet. Eventually I would like to try EVO and if he does well on them rotate them every 6 months.

What do you guys think would be the best choice to start him on the higher protein food?

*I can get pretty much any brand kibble except for Orijen so any recommendations are well come.

Thanks.

Well, I use CORE and really like it. I also mix in either homecooked meat or Wellness canned 95% meat with evening meals. You will get every different opinion on this site, you'll just have to go with what you think is best. I went with CORE because it was a bit lower in protein. I used Solid Gold BATM and had a few urinary poblems in both dogs. Whether or not the high protein contributed I really don't know, but I switched to CORE and have had no problems since then. Good luck on your decision, you can drive yourself crazy trying to find the "perfect" food.

Thanks for the quick response!

Right now on Cali. Natural Bentley does 2 cups in the morning and 2 in the evening. I know with higher protein foods the recommended feeding is less.

Which CORE are you feeding the original or ocean? And how much are you feeding your male?

I actually rotate between the Ocean Fish and the Chicken. I did see one that said I believe Duck and Fish, but was in a hurry and didn't look very close. I need to check that one out. I usually rotate after a couple of bags. :) Oh yeah, my male gets approximately 2 to 2 1/4 cups per day, but I do mix in meat with the evening meal.

Well I went to the local Pet Supplies Plus and decided to go with the CORE Ocean formula because of the lower protein content. I figured it would be a better transition to the high protein diet as opposed to EVO. Hopefully he does well on this food for a couple of months so I can try other high protein foods that I can rotate in and out of his diet.

Thanks for the replies.

*If anyone in the Dallas, TX area reads this thread are local Pet Supplies Plus is now carrying Orijen!

We started last Tuesday slowly transitioning him over to CORE and last nite (Friday) we noticed red bumps on his chest. Could this be an allergic reaction to the food?

If Orijen is now available in your area, maybe you could give it a try. Evo didn't agree with Lola at all but she's doing fantastic on the Orijen. In fact, I can't believe how good she looks for a 9 year old! Otherwise, you may just want to stick with California Natural if switching doesn't agree with Bentley. At least the California Natural is a very good food to go back to if need be. Good luck!
