Hey! I just found this board & love it! I have a question for you guys!

I have a 4 year old boxer that is an outdoor dog. We had her inside till she was about a year old so she is house broken. I also have a 13 mo old daughter who is just now walking/climbing etc. Lexi responds to some commands like sit, laydown, come, etc but how should I go about teaching her some manners with my dd Kylie?
When Kylie is down walking around, Lexi is right in her face licking and sniffing. I know they need some time to get used to each other but how can I help the process. Because I would love for Lexi to become an indoor/outdoor dog.
Is this something I can accomplish my self or do you think I would be better off getting her in an obedience class or something?

TIA for your help!

My little girl will be 12mothns old on the 18th. Harley is 4 1/2 months old. He does go to a puppy class and knows basic manners, the problem I'm having with him around the baby is...
When I am on the floor with her, Harley feels the need to be in my lap. Also, now that she stands a lot, he likes to lean up against her... and sometimes sit next to her, but lean on her.
I've basically been trying to correct the problem by giving him toys of his own, diverting his attention, etc... so far so good, but sometimes he foregets.

I'm looking forward to any other feedback on your pst as well.

Good Luck,

I would definitely take Kylie to obedience class. You can teach him off or leave it so that he will leave you daughter alone. You could also teach him to go to his place or bed when you want him to go lie down and leave your daughter.

Manners

My daugher is 2yrs. old and Annabell is 4 months, they do ok together but occasionally Annabell forgets that the baby is smaller than me. She jumps up and kisses her and then my daughter screams.

We have taught Annabell "DOWN" for when she jumps up or for when she is bothering the baby. She understands this and moves on to one of the adults or to a toy or her kennel. It is all about patience and understanding. Because you want the dog and baby to get along, and do not want the dog to feel like it is a bad thing for her/him to love on there sibling.

An obediance class would really help teach her some useful command as Julie M. stated. The rest is a daily learning process, when your dog knows its place in the pack it will be easier for her to respect your daughter. My youngest is 18 mos old and we still go through the trials and tribulations of teaching respect for both of them. Seeing them grow up together is priceless. Good luck.
