Abby finally had surgery

I just wanted to give you an update on Abby. We took her in on Sunday to OSU, surgery was Monday morning and everything went well! No trouble at all in surgery. I was updated by the hospital quite a bit on Monday but was sure glad when she was out of surgery. The doctor said her TPLO surgery was successful and now all she needed was plenty of rest. We went to pick her up on Tuesday. Boy, she was ready to come home. The x-rays of her before and after leg were amazing. She has screws in her knee and ankle but will come out eventually. Her leg is bruised and shaved (not to mention all of the staples).
I am so glad to have her home, Baxter really missed her (We did too!). I have never seen him more depressed. But as soon as she got home everything changed. And now he is back to normal. He just can not figure out why she can not play with him. She must be crated as much as possible to rest her leg.

Thank you very much for all of your prayers. We are now on the road to recovery and can not wait to take her on walks and get things back to normal. I think the only thing we will miss about this experience is carrying her up and down all of the stairs. (LOL) No stairs for the first month is what we were told. So we just think of it as our daily workouts with 70# Abby! Anyway, glad to share good news.

I KNow Where You Are Coming From!!!

Rocky had to have surgery this year, to repair a bad knee. They had to shave off one of the tops of his bones, put screws in, and staple the skin shut. The recovery was very long, Rocky had to remain crated, and then only taken out on a leash. We had to do this for 6 weeks, and there were some times that Rocky would take off running out of the crate. But, the surgery was worth it. Now Rocky is healed, and he can jump and play like a normal puppy. Now, I have to think about getting the other knee done, it is not as bad, but when I think about the recovery...I have decided to wait awhile. Good luck with the recovery process!!!!

While Rocky was at the hospital, his little brother Saddam was at home depressed. I think he thought his brother was dead, even though I took him to the hospital with Rocky. After 5 days, when I brought Rocky home, Saddam went crazy..he shook and whimpered, almost as though he could not believe his brother was back. It was very heartbreaking, as these 2 brothers had never been separated. I am glad you have your baby back home again.

Taliesyn88 - Did Rocky go lame in the other leg? Did the doctor's tell you that having the other leg done was a possibility? That is one thing that I worry about with Abby. She hates the crate and the e-collar. It has been rough for her. And the thought of possibly going through this again. Well I'll worry about that if the time comes. Why was Rocky in the hospital for 5 days, Abby was there for 2 1/2 days. Was everything O.K.? Thanks for the luck with recovery, I realize that it is going to be a long one.

Our Boxer boy just came home from having the TPLO surgery up at K-State on Sunday night. He is just over a year old and he had fully ruptured his right rear legs' cruciate ligament. He is a show prospect and I am wondering and worrying if he will ever get his beautiful gait back? We will be happy if he can just walk normally again. Right now he won't walk on the leg in the mornings, he usually gets warmed up about noon and then he will use the leg. Even though we have him walking on the leash only, there are times he likes to hop on three legs. I wonder if maybe we shouldn't let him hop. He just stopped having bloody diahrea, which the vets told me was probably from the trauma of the surgery. We had to hold off on some of his medications until the blood stopped. We have just re-started the medication. We are only a few days in to this and would love to have advice on what to expect and what to watch out for!!!! Thanks

Ligaments Take Much Longer Than Bones to Heal

When Rocky had his knee surgery, it was several weeks before he would use his leg. First he had it in a cast for support, and after 7 days I removed it. He favored the leg, and would hop around on 3 legs. But, that is good, because he allowed it to heal. A couple of times, in the 6 week period, he would get loose and run out open, on 3 legs, still favoring the operated leg. Now Rocky's leg is healed, and he is doing great. Not only is he bending his knee, he is so much more happier and active. With your baby, remember, ligaments take much longer to heal than bone, so you will have several weeks of recoup. He will hop on 3 legs for a long time, because his operative leg is tender, and he is unsure of it. Let him take his time, as that will promote healing!!!! Little by little, he will test the leg and soon will be using it. Right now, you have to have extreme patience, as recover is long, and boxers sometime get a little over anxious to begin active play. Keep him on a leash for several weeks, so he does not reinjure his leg. Have patience, he will heal soon!!!!!

What were the symptoms of the cruciate tear?

Apollo has been favoring his rear left leg. He walks fine on it, but will lift it up when he's just standing and will limp when he just stands up.

The vet thinks he has a cruciate tear or a partial cruciate tear, both cases would require surgery. I'm taking him to an orthpedic surgeon for diagnosis. God, I really hope it's just a pulled muscle :(

Abby had been favoring her rear right leg. She would limp quite a bit and she could not sit normally. When she would sit, she would scoot her legs off to the side. Her diagnosis was not made right away because her leg did not show any instability. We actually went to two orthopedic surgeons. The first one sent us to OSU for another doctor to look at her. We visited the orthopedic doctor for 2 1/2 months becasue he did not want to jump into sugery. He wanted to be sure. She had TPLO surgery on November 1 and is doing great. She was walking the day after surgery. It is a long recovering process though. I am glad we had the surgery and I am also glad that we made sure of the daignosis before rushing into anything. I hope Apollo has a pulled muscle too. Good Luck.
