We have a 4 month old male boxer. He is a great dog. We walk him several times during the day. He has had only 3 accidents in the house the past 3 1/2 weeks. When he is in the den, he always goes to the sliding doors or the gate that we have to block him off from the rest of the house to let us know he has to go out and do his business and if we are not there he will bark. He has not had a accident in the den in over a month. The problem that I have is if he is in a different room he doesn't come to us or let us know that he needs to go out. The only accidents he has had was doing poop in the Living room twice and the basement.
How to I go about getting him to let us know if he needs to go out or not? Has anyone else had the same type of experiences? I know he is still young but are we doing well so far? It has been over 20 years since I have trained a puppy.

Also, the only times he is in the crate is when we go out or at night time when we go to bed. He is able to hold it for a good 5 - 6 hours when in the crate.

I'm sure you've read it here before...bell training. Before I ever found this site, this is what I used and it works. Buy a cowbell, or christmas bells from walmart and simply hang over the door knob. Every time you take him out to do his business help him ring his bells (with his paws or nose. The nose makes less scratches around the door.) Anyway, try this a few days and I promise he'll pick up on it. No matter where you are in the house I'm here to tell you he'll let you know and drive you nuts until you let him out. Ha! Hope this helps. Good luck.
