A Question for White Boxer owners!!!

White Boxers are great!!

I have a white boxer girlie.....Macey. I love her to death! I would NEVER breed a white, but with mine, there are no health problems (except selective hearing)!!:D :rolleyes:
I also work for a vet and the only thing he tells our patients is to PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE spay or neuter them (ok, he tells everyone that), then he has them talk with me about boxers in general!
I use the children's sunblock (45 spf) on all of mine - especially Macey. I don't want her to get sunburned. My vet ok'd the sunblock for dogs.

We have a white boxer and a brindle that we got from the same breeder. We got Indy the brindle first, and Ava a year later.

When she first broached the subject of getting a white, I had the same questions about deafness and health issues. There is a higher incidence of deafness at birth in white boxers than their colored brethren. Seems I read that their is a slightly higher incidence of blindness at birth, but I'm not sure.

Katherine told me that apart from being born with the higher rate for deafness, studies of the records of both white and colored boxers showed no difference in health between the two.

Their temperaments are the same. The only difference is the color. I've read other articles that confirm what she told me.

I too use children's waterproof sunblock (spf 45) on her vulnerable areas. A light coat is all you really need, but you also should remember to put it on at least 30 minutes BEFORE going out into the sun. (Use as directed.)

There are sunblocks made especially for dogs, but a lot of people I know with whites also use children's sunblock with no problems at all. If skin problems should occur, stop using it and go to another product. Generally the more mild the better, thus; children's sunblock.

I don't use it on a daily basis because where we walk on our nature trail is all shaded by giant trees, etc., and Susie always heads toward the shade when we approach a patch of bright sun. She never stays out on the deck for long because it is too hot for her. I can tell she really feels the heat more than my fawn, Maggie. Seems Maggie can stay lying in the sun for an hour or more before she gets too hot. Susie lasts about 15 minutes and then she's back in the air conditioning

My boy Blake is now 6 years old and healthy as a horse. We adopted him 1 year ago and he is great. He did however stubb his toe at the dog park this past weekend and broke a toenail, but I am pretty sure that had nothing to do with his whiteness:D . Other than that he has had no health problems. IMO, any boxer is great! Good luck to you.

My little monster is very healthy. Occasionally she will get a rash from being outside. I think she is allergic to tree pollen. She hasn't had any flare up since it went low.
I use a children's generic sunscreen and it works well. Powder also has a low tolarence to heat and cold. Her favorite spot is on the air conditioning/heater vent. I just watch her closely. Give her plenty of water and If she gets to hot I take her inside.
Any way you look at it they will fill your life with love.

I've had Harley since he was 10 wks old & the only problem he's had is a "y" shaped scar on the back of his neck. Supposedly it was from either his vaccine being administered wrong or an allergic reaction to it. I had it cut out because it was irritating him. He is not deaf nor does he have any other problems. In fact, Zoe who is fawn has had more health problems than he has!

Regarding the heat, my experience is the opposite of coveyjt's. We haven't had any hot weather here in the Northeast yet, but Indy will get out of the sun before Ava. And, when they are lying together, he is considerably warmer since he absorbs the radiant heat from the sun while Ava reflects it.

She is cool to the touch, and he feels like he's got a fever.

Just wonderin' if they or another Boxer will lick the sunscreen that has been applied?
