A good reason why you should NOT use a retractable leash...(kinda long)

you know what you made a good point... I was told it was because of the retractable leash... however I would also like to know how it is different (safety wise) from any other leash...

An update on Kneesaa's progress... first off let me say that she has been such a good girl through all this... we only had one minor problem... she jumped off the bed on Sunday night and yelped... but other than that.. I think she knows that she's hurt and she hasn't really made much of an attempt to run around which really helps us out... she's been sleeping with us every night and she stays right next to me on the bed.. she also sits on the couch with us while we watch tv... I talked to the vet today and she said that Kneesaa can walk around to go to the bathroom and walk around the house... but to just not let her play rough where she would smash her paws down... like boxers do... so this is a total relief... I didn't get a chance to talk to the vet until today and was just going on my friends advice to keep her totally off her feet... I feel better to be safe than sorry.. so Kneesaa goes back to the vet on the 20th for more shots and to make sure that the paw is doing ok...

Thank you so much to everyone who responded to this post... It made me feel so great about Boxer owners when I saw how many people really care! Thanks again and Knessaa says thank you and hello as well...hehe..

retractable leash

I use a retractable leash (16 feet) on Sundance while we walk in the neighborhood. I keep him close to me though when cars are driving by. Please educate me on why some of you are totally against using them as I respect opinions given on BW. Is it the length?

I never use a retractable leash because Scrapper is in obedience class and has learned to heel right next to my left side. I use the normal size flat leash on our walks/runs. Usually when I see a retractable leash, on the other end is a little white fluffy thing that runs right ahead with absolutely no discipline - behavior that no large dog could get away with. Also, I wonder how much control you would have if the leash were extended and another dog, cat or kid ran up unexpectedly. Already I get people moving out into the street when we are coming by, they always give us a wide berth.

I'm so sorry about your baby getting hurt. Sending good thoughts for a speedy recovery.

broken toes

I can totally relate to what you are going through. My haylee broke her leg when she was 6 months old. She broke it very close to the joint (like our wrist) right above the joint. They thought she would need pins and screws because the first time they set her leg, she knocked it out of place.

It was very hard for me and her. She had a cast on for 6 months. We had to carry her up & down the stairs and only let her down to go potty. I had to seperate her from my other dogs because of course she wanted to play. Luckily she never had to have surgery because we kept her on complete bed rest. The vet gave us some medication to keep her calm too. That helped alot cause she's so hyper.

Don't loose faith, keep her quiet and let her rest alot. With her being so young I'm sure she will heal up fast just like my Haylee.
Be patient!! Good Luck! You can e-mail me if you have any questions I'll be glad to help you and your baby.angelicon :(
Hopefully she'll be perfect just like my Haylee is!!!!lovicon

retractable leash

I personally don't like retractable leashes because if you need to pull your dog back fast and the leash is stretched out far you don't have any control.

And they get stuck with prolong use. I also think the string is to thin, it seems flimsy.

My opinion is that a regular leash or chain chocker with a 4-6 foot leash is the best. It gives you better control of unexpected circumstances. Having a boxer is always full of surprises.

Good Luck!!

I have never cared for retractable leashes. Something about a good, strong, 4' lead appeals to me, so I can keep Molly close to me.

i totally agree with Troy I love using a 4 foot lead you have sooo much more control.Definatly with a large breed of dog I have two very big dogs and I just dont trust something that small to hold my babies if they see something they want bad enough! If your dog is on the end of the lead and a agressive dog or anything is close by there is no sure way of getting your dog away fast. With a 4 foot lead they cant get to far away and you can just pull them back to you. To me they just dont satisfy my needs of safety for my babys. Good Luck to you and Kneesa both!

Update on Kneesaa
Well the cast is off!!! YAY!!! The vet took it off early (we had to bring her back b/c she had actually grown right out of it!) and he said to let her run on it if she wants to run on it... walk if she wants to walk and let her limp if she has to limp...he said that the fractures were so close to one another and b/c she had already began to grow more since she did it...she should have no trouble at all healing... so she is free to do what she wants now...which makes me feel so much better...i was sooo sad to see her having to lie down and unable to play...:( so now she can go for walks again!! YAY!!! we even brought her camping this past week...she had a ball and cried when the tent came down... (i think she had thought we moved to this wonderful place where you could just pee everywhere) but if you want to see what her little cast looks like i have new pictures up in my gallery of her... it was a lovely green color... a friend of ours told us she looked like a powerpuff puppy hehe:eek: but we are happy that she is better...she still limps on it a little when she's overexcerted herself...but basically she's her normal happy puppy self...she goes back to the vet on the 20th anyways for some more shots...so i'm just going to have him look at it again then ... just to be on the safe side of course!!! thanks to everyone who wished her well... kneesaa sends lots of big sloppy kisses!!!

I am sorry to hear about your puppy getting injured. I have been using retractable leashes for years and have never had a problem with them. I only use them when I am training to get distance between me and the dog and still have control. If your friend would have taken the leash off of you puppy would she have ran away?
