A few questions

I jsut thought I'd ask these questions here as there are some seasoned barfers out there who could most likely help me.

1. Is it alright to mix different types of rmbs for one meal...say, chicken carcass and rabbit or turkey and lamb etc?

2. Why does Shakespeare rub his face good and hard in the snow or on his bed after he eats? Is he allergic do you think...(itchy)? His toes have always been red and inflamed looking. He seems to be allergic to air some days! I was hoping this diet would help. I've always homecooked. I was hoping the elimination of grains and the addition of raw meat would help him.

3. I've continued cooking my veggies. Sweet potatoes, carrots and zuccini are the favourites around here. I tried some raw veg and it caused a day of diarreah in my girl Penny. Is it ok to cook the veg? Everything else is raw...eggs, offal etc.

4. Poops have been a little runny the last few days...I'm assuming it will take time to get the "textbook" poop. (Sorry about the terminology). I'm eagerly awaiting the poops that dry up and disappear in a few days.:p

Thanx in advance for your help

1. I've mixed different rmb's with no problems.

2. All my Boxers have done this, even way back when I did feed kibble. They just seem to like a face wipe after dinner :) I have to direct Bella to her bed, she prefers rubbing her face on us :p Ruben rubs his face while singing the woo woo song

3. Cooked veggies are better than no veggies :) You may like to try to raw again though ... Was there a certain veggie that upset Penny? Could it have been something other than veggies? How did you prepare the raw veggies?

4. If they are getting a large variety of foods, and are new to BARFing, it may cause loose stools.. When I switch a rescue to BARF, the text book poop usually appears after 3 - 5 days. Sometimes a lot of offal will cause this too, or a lot of veggies ..

Dido to what Sharon said...

As for veggies, I think most dogs can't handle a plain veggie meal. It goes down a lot better with your offal selection because they mix well. So instead of feeding one night offal and one night plain raw veggies... I feed twice a week of veggie/offal mix.

I combine my cooked veggies, offal and rmbs all together with everymeal. I add my supplements as needed. The days that Penny "reacted" I had added some raw veggie mash to the mix. It didn't turn out as planned;) .

It is alright to combine everything like that isn't it? The dogs seem to be happy with it. Some days, though not often, they don't get veg at all.

I have heard on this board not to combine your RMB with veggies... something about the stomach digest these very different foods at a very differnt rate of time. If that is true, that might have something to do with the runny stool.

I often feed RMB's with veggies and have never had a problem. Markus doesn't think he has eaten unless he gets a RMB. Silly boy. :)

My dogs get 1 - 2 tablespoons of raw veggies with nearly every RMB (main chicken wings) meal. This seems to work best for them :)

Troy, just play around with different meal combinations to see what suits Penny and Shakespeare best. Remember than when feeding BARF you can go for balance over time, rather than trying to feed complete meals.
