A Boxer in need.. long and sad :(

Last week we had the worst snow storm in Dayton history ( over 20" overnight) and below freezing temperatures. We had just finished breakfast and my husband opened the front door to feed the birds our left over bread, I then heard him yell "sweety, there is a boxer at our door" Obviously I was a bit confused as our two boxers were right in front of me. Anyhow, this poor beautiful boxer boy was hunched on our front porch, covered with ice, barely able to move. We immediately brought him into our attached garage, provided him with tons of blankets , a space heater, and began the process of finding his owners. We are reletively new to our neighborhood, so my husband went across the street to fellow boxer owners to see if they might know who he belonged to. They did not. I began calling shelters, police stations. ( Note that this was Xmas, which makes this story even sadder) I left our name, address and phone number with all. This poor baby did not move for over 20 hours, he just layed there saying thank you for bing kind with his big brown eyes. Finally at about 2:30 in the morning he ate the food we had given him. On Sunday I took "found" notices to all of the area pet stores and posted them. Still no word. By Monday we started to realize that it was probable that someone had either dumped or abandoned him. We made an appointment and took him to our vet. He got all of his vaccines, and was being a normal boxer. He is very lovable and sweet. Here is the sad part.... Our vet called with the results of his heartworm tests and he has BAD heartworms. So it appears that some irresponsible idiot had enough money to buy a purebred boxer but not enough money to do something as simple as get him heartworm prevention.( the vet judges his age between one and two years) The vet said we have three choices, a very expensive and intensive arsenic type treatment that may kill him ( and we would have to keep him "quiet" for a month and a half, impossible with two other boxers) , a continual treatment by pill which may or may not work, and of course option numbe three, putting him down. Option number three not being acceptable, today we took him back to the vet for some tests that will better judge the degree of severity so we will know whether option # 2 may work ( this option ranging from $200-$300.) This is not about money, if I had a ton of money I would stop at nothing, unfortunately we are not rich, the budget is tight being right after Xmas and his vaccines and physical cost $130 which we already paid for. This poor baby is so sweet and thankful for our kindness, how could someone do this to him,let alone at Xmas and during the worst snow storm in history???? Anyhow, I guess I just wanted to vent and maybe see if anyone out there has had experience with a pup having heartworm and could maybe share their experience with me. Thank you for listening ( or reading)

I don't have any experience with a pup with heartworm, but I just wanted to say that it is wonderful that you took this guy in!! I cannot believe the cruelty of people, and you're right that he was probably dumped. In my lifetime, my family has rescued countless dogs and cats that have been dumped at my parents' place (they have a barn, which seems to draw the attention of those looking to dump their animals).

He's so lucky he found you guys! An angel must have led him to your door knowing he would be taken care of :) Does he have a name yet?

He is so lucky he found you! The awful ice and snow we had combined with the cold temperatures he could have died!

I don't have any experience with heartworms, but I hope that he gets healthy! Keep us posted.

Im so sorry that he has heartworms! I also dont have any experience with them, but I really hope he pulls through, he sounds like a big sweetheart. I dont think I will ever understand how some people can be so cruel to animals...its almost like whoever dumped him figured it would be the best night to do it since it was so cold and they probably figured that he would die that night...but luckily the poor baby found the right house to go to. Give him a hug for us!

I don't have any experience with heartworms either, but I just wanted to congratulate you on your kindness. I think you got a beautiful Christmas present! You should name him Kringle! Just kidding! My heart goes out to him and you and your husband.

You could contact a local Boxer Rescue organization...they have a lot of experience with heartworms and may be able to give you some insight on what to expect and how to take care of him.

By default, his name is "Buddy" as we fully expected his owners to be franticalle searchign for him and just kept saying " its gonna be ok buddy" Since he now thinks his name is buddy we are going to keep it (not very original but he seems to like it !!)

Leah I think it is wonderful that you took in this poor guy.
Hearing about him being out in the cold like that just breaks my heart.
I will never understand how someone could just dump off a poor defenseless animal. I get so mad when I hear these kind of stories.
Luckily this one sounds like it has a good ending.
Good luck with his heartworm treatment. Please keep us posted on his progress

Leah..what a wonderful loving thing you are doing for Buddy!! I'm wondering if someone purposely dropped him off at your doorstep knowing that you had 2 boxers already?? Some people!!
Praying for a successful HW treatment and that he fully recovers from the trauma of being abadoned! Are you going to keep him if the original owners do not come forward (which I highly doubt they will)?
Bless you...you're his angel! angelicon

Leah, I dont know if this is an option or not but...

What about taking him to a local rescue? They may be able to provide him better care for the heart worms? I dont know your situation but I wish that there was something that I could do to help you. I am so sorry for this little guy. Poor thing. I pray that the medication will make him better and healthy.
