When Baron did this we would tell him NO in a very firm voice and then stop playing with him. This seemed to work as he no longer bites - even in play once he feels skin he stops immediately!

Zane was quite a biter, he's older now and SLOWLY grew out of it. I have heard everything form yelp to let them know they are hurting you to bite them back. I too used the penny can, But now Zane is petrified of any loud noise, I think training with the penny can made him a little jumpy so you might want to rethink that one.

I would try redirecting him when he bites tell him no biting, and then give him something he can chew on. If he continues to bite (which is probably part play and part because dogs like to chew) tell him no biting and then ignore him (leave the room or go to a spot where he can't reach you and totally ignore him). When you resume interacting with him repeat this anytime he bites. He may be too young, he is only a baby, but it can't hurt to start training yourself on how to react and deal when things like this came up. Zane is a year and over the past few months I finally got him to stop mouthing my wrist - and the method I described is how I did it)Also everyone on BW told me to get the book the Dog Listener - her theories make sense, you might want to check it out.

Completely Boxer Crazy
This is something every puppy does and what we did with Hennessy was to say no bitty and of course he did`nt listen and then we would end play and ignore him and after awhile doing the same consistant procedure he got the message, but it takes time and patience, learning is hard work!

Shotze is also a biter. I tried the penny can but she barked at it. I also tried acting like a Momma dog (hahaha) and barking in a vicious manner...she just looked at me like I was crazy and then barked back. So now Im doing what has been suggested with ignoring her. It seems to be working. One thing to remember, if you let them bite you sometimes then they will NEVER get the fact that they cant bite....be consistent. No biting at NO time.

We are going through the same thing with our new puppy. Tasha is 9 weeks old now and we are trying to teach her that biting isnt good. Me and my wife get up and try to ignore her when she starts biting, but its a little harder for our two year old son because he runs off and she thinks that he is playing. Hopefully both our puppies stop the biting quickly. Good luck!

Mugsy used to do that too. He quickly learned that he isn't allowed to bite. We would tell him No bite firmly and then give him a chew toy. Now all he chews on are his bones - he hasn't even gone after the furniture.

Make sure you use a toy when playing

When you play with the puppy, use a toy and make sure you let him know if he bites to high and catches your skin. Don't play with the puppy with your bare hands untill he "gets it".

You don't want to play rough with your hands and then try to calm him and pet him with the same hands. That'll confuse the puppy and he may bite you in an attempt to play.

Teaching bite inhibition

When I was reading Jean Donaldson's Culture Clash, she said you need to let them mouth you to teach them bite inhibition. That a puppy that was never allowed to bite, was more likely to deliver a severe bite if it got aggresive, because it had never been taught bite inhibition. Thoughts on this?
