Its never too old. :D but i am a little bit confused, you want him to go inside? (or he's an indoor dog, and he should go outside.. prolly that..) anyways, being a puppy still, i would take him out after playing, after waking up, and a little bit after eating. at 6mos, he probably won't have to go as much as a 8wk old, but still watch him. And when you take him out, u may want to put him on a lead, and take him to a designated spot, and make sure he goes. then praise him like crazy after he does his business!

I got my puppy at about 4 1/2 mos. and from my experience the biggest thing for your puppy isn't going to be realizing he needs to go outside its going to be figureing out how to tell you its time to go. It only took my jasmine a few weeks to really get it down but for the first few days I was taking her outside almost every hour (except at night) just so she knew that's where to go (I also had the time to do it). when she realized outside was for potty purposes I took her out as SoleilBxrs said when she wakes up, after meals (some puppies differ in time here), before bed and after decent size naps too.
Remember something though that at this point for your puppy outside is a place for business so praise them but don't play too much out there. Play when you get back in so he doesn't expect or want to play as much outside...keep it business only till he has it down.

I agree ... take him to the door very frequently. He will eventually learn why he is taken to the door every hour. I had seen a post on here where one person actually had their dog hit a bell that was tied to the door, so whenever their dog had to go to the bathroom then later on.... it would ring the bell. If i could go back and retrain deuce, i would train him to ring a bell!!!
If he goes inside, dont let him see you clean it up and when you do clean it spray it w/ a solution of water and white vinegar (it takes away the scent). Many dogs will want to mark in teh same place if they smell the scent.
Also, dont punish teh dog for going inside unless you catch him in the act. The dog will not make the connection otherwise.
6 months is plenty young! I know of a lot of people that have trained dogs much much older!!!!
