6 month boxer and newborn baby

I just had a baby and our 6 month old boxer seems to be having a hard time adjusting. Sometimes if the baby is crying she will stand in front of him and just bark at him. Then, when I pick him up she jumps up after him. What if she tries to get a hold of him?? I'm worried....
I'm also concerned because she gets sooo rambunctious sometimes and those big paws get dangerous! She also tends to bite a lot when she plays. We try to tell her no but she is just so excited she can't focus on what we are telling her. Does anyone have any experience with boxers and babies? Will she ever get more control over her paws?? I don't want her to accidentally scratch or jump on my son. We stopped letting her on the furniture, which has helped calm my fears a little. I just want her to be more gentle around him.

congrats on the new baby - i'm sure it will take time for the puppy to get used to the new baby and all the noises he brings into the house. THere will be an adjustment period as with everything.

I was just watching a Cesaer Millan video about new babies and dogs -bascially like anything new - the dog needs time to adjust. In the meantime - don't let the dog near your baby - in his room or anywhere where he will be. Set boundaries early so the dog knows that the scent of the baby = dont get close. Hopefully repetition will work.

I dont have a baby but we have a 6 mo. old puppy and are going to start trying to get pregnant soon. I'll be curious as to how this works out for you. Good luck - keep me posted!

I was just watching a Cesaer Millan video about new babies and dogs -bascially like anything new - the dog needs time to adjust. In the meantime - don't let the dog near your baby - in his room or anywhere where he will be. Set boundaries early so the dog knows that the scent of the baby = dont get close. Is that what Cesaer Milan says to do???????? What a flippin muppet that man is. We've done the baby & 2 boxer thing, I'm sorry but I totally disagree with this - dogs need to be involved in day to day life with a baby not be shut out the way.

I completely agree. I think a dog should NOT be separated from the baby and kept away from the baby's room. A dog needs to learn how to interact with the baby and not just be kept away. I'm about 18 weeks along and we plan on having Rolen involved in every step of the way.

he didn't mean block off the baby from the dog forever, just so that the dog knows the baby has a scent and the scent means to be gentle?

My daughter was 10 months old when we got an 8 week old puppy. That was an issue because our daughter is still crawling around and right on the dogs level. We just tried to watch very carefully when the baby and puppy were around eachother. The puppy did manage to get a couple scratches in but we kept stressing to the puppy to be gentle and now at 14 weeks she's great with the baby and even the other little baby that comes to play sometimes. Now the baby even crawls all over the puppy and she just lays there and lets her, and if the baby accidentally hurts her she just gets up and walks away. Congrats on your new baby and I hope everything works out.

my advices

I'll say that a no when you dog bites is not enough.... read about the bite inibition, that worked perfectly for me.

I can play with dax , get VERY exited and still no bit, dont get me wrong.... when we play she charge on me, jump, growl loudly, she try to "bite" my hands but I'll say she "mouths" my hands because she just know the limit and I do trust her. Took a long time, lots of practice but it pays. Now I can play with her using the baby's hands, baby laugh hard and Dax love it. She is calmer around the little boy. Even with my 5 yo, she plays calmer compare to playing with me.

So if you dog try to jump will you have baby, you got to own your space my dear. Dont let him do it. Have you dog INVOLVED with the daily baby stuff. Let him smell the diapers, they love that. let him follow you around when you bath the baby, change diaper...

The last advice, that will conclude this post is EXERCISE, a tired puppy is a good puppy. 2 times 20 minutes walk is the minimum MORE is BETTER.

Boxers and Babies

The sooner you let the puppy have some interaction with the baby the less crazy the puppy will act about this new addition and all the craziness that is going on around the house.. Puppy at 6 months old should have some training and that should continue and lots of attention this will also reduce the energy level and the possible craziness. With each of my children we would let the dogs smell a blanket that the baby had just been in let the dogs explore things like the car seat and other items that the baby uses a lot. Let the puppy sniff the seat and if he/she tries to jump on or in it simply use the normal command you use for leave it. Let the puppy in when you are rocking the baby or feeding the baby other calm times like this pet the puppy with one hand and hold the baby with the other. The best advice i could give you is do not ignore the puppy or keep it from the baby it will make things much worse the puppy will begin to act out even more... Things will settle down as the puppy gets used to all the craziness.... Good luck and congratulations!
