5 month old puppy with potty problems

I have a 5 month old male boxer. He is potty trained (he goes to the door when he wants out and will bark) however, when we leave him alone in the house we always come home to a pee spot on the floor. We make sure he goes potty before we leave and we pick his water bowl up off the floor (unless we are going to be gone for more than 3 hours), but we can't seem to break him. I thought he would be better since we have 3 other boxers staying with him at our house, but that doesn't seem to matter.

Can anyone relate to this situation? Is is just separation anxiety? Does anyone have some tips for me?

Do you crate your puppy??

I couldn't let a 5 mth boxer roam the house with me in it without having to worry about an accident. Even though he may be trained, when they are not crated and they feel a need to go, they will. Crating them helps to teach them to hold it for long periods of time.
Casey is a year old and I will still not let her roam the house when we are gone for many reasons. She will always find something to get into and even though I know she is trained and can hold it for quite awhile, I don't want to give her the opportunity to have that one time accident.

I would keep him crated while you are out. Good luck

I agree with My Casey. Memphis is alomst 1 year old and we can only leave her alone for about 2 hours before she gets into something. She is crated during the day and the few times she "broken out of jail" she has had accidents in the basement. I don't know if its the excitment or all the room (they usually won't do thier business where they sleep) but I would crate him and SLOWLY introduce him being able to be free--be patient He'll come around.

Tyson is almost 6 months old, and we crate him all day while at work. But at night he sleeps on the floor in our bedroom, and lately he's been getting up in the middle of the night to play. And this has caused us problems. We leave the bedroom door shut, so he'll have to whine to get out of the room, this wakes us up and we'll let him out to go potty and then we crawl back in bed and he goes and plays. But I have to make sure that when he's done playing and comes back to bed, that I have to shut the door. Why? Because if he gets up again and doesn't wake us up, there will surely be a puddle downstairs in the morning. One time there was even a pile! Tyson holds it all day while at work and he's in his crate. So we're having the same problem as you kind of. And our only solution is to keep a close I on him. And keep him in the crate if we can't. I wish we could leave him out of his crate all day, or even while we're gone just a couple hours, but I think we're are just going to have to wait for him to get alittle older.

If you crate him during the day, why wouldn't you crate him at night? We felt at first that it was terrible putting Casey in the crate. But she knows when it is time for bed, after we take her out for the last time, she gets a cookie and heads straight for the crate. We don't have any problems and she knows that its her bed. If you want Tyson in your room, just bring in the crate, eventually you'll be able to let him out of the crate and he'll know to stay in the room and he won't have accidents or look to go out till the morning. :D Good Luck
