Here is my situatation... I have a 1.5 year old girl that is gated off downstairs, and now I have a 13 week old male who is crated at night. During the week we get up early to beat the traffic so the dogs get to go outside by 6am. Well on the weekends, my wife and I would like to sleep in maybe till 8am. But around 6:30 or earlier, our new guy starts barking his full head off.... What do we do? We usually let him bark till around 7am then take them out. I think that is training him to bark to get out, but in the morning they need to go out to do their business. Any suggestions?

He probably has to go potty - Scrapper woke up every AM at 5:30 for quite some time because he had to go. If he's barking for that reason, you probably should just get used to taking him out until he's older. 13 weeks is very young to hold it long. Bring him back into bed with you if you want to sleep longer. They get used to that. Now, every AM when I wake up, there is a full-grown snoring Boxer lying next to me. (hubby gets up earlier than I do) Right now, while you are working on house-training, it's important to him that you acknowledge his signals that he has to relieve himself. I wouldn't ignore him right now. Sorry, but this inconvenience will pass and he will be able to hold it longer when he's older.

LOL! We have the same situation. Buster and Maggie have no concept of "weekend" - except that it means Mom and Dad are home all day. :D

I always put them out the same time every day, and on weekends I bring them back in and let them amuse themselves while I go back to bed... sleepicon

When Buster was younger and couldn't be trusted out of his crate for even an hour, I would put him back in his crate with a frozen stuffed kong or some other kind of "this will take him a while" treat filled toy or marrow bone.

You can't really expect them to know the difference between weekends and weekdays. They get into a routine and want to stick to it. I've found it's best to get them outside to pee/poop, then once the pressure is relieved :o they're more inclined to relax on those lazy weekend mornings.

Don't be mad at me but I go to work at 10:30... sorry people!!!!

Krose wakes me up around 8 or so, we go out, he does his business and we come back home and go to sleep again. He knows the routine and it doesn't change on the weekends either. I don't have any trouble going back to sleep after I take him outside. We've been always this way.

Like everyone else said they probably just have to potty!! Either bring them back to bed with you or try to wear them out before you go to bed on the weekends a little more so they may sleep a little later?? Just a suggestion!

Oh this sounds all too familiar!!! Trinity is 15 weeks, and up until recently she was doing the same thing. We would take her out before we went to bed, and at 5:30 am she was up ready to go. During the week this was fine, my husband and I wake up at 5:30 to get ready for work anyway. Well on the weekends this wasn't gonna fly! She sleeps with us, not in her crate, and what I've found works for her is on the weekends, try to take her out as late as possible. If I do wake up in the middle of the night, I'll take her outside and bring her back to bed. If I do not wake up, she'll get me up at around 6 am, we go outside she does her stuff and we go back to bed. This weekend she actually slept with us till 10 am!!!! It does get better though, during the week she's been sleeping through the night with no potty breaks, we'll take her out at about 10 pm and she's good till 5:30 am!!!!

We have a 4 mos old pup now and are going through the same thing. We get up at 5:30 during the week, and every Saturday and Sunday, Munson is up crying at 5:30. When he was too young to go back to sleep my husband and I took turns getting the early shift. I sometimes volunteered b/c I would have an excuse for a nap later!! ;)

Samantha used to wake me up earlier than I wanted to get up, but now, I get up before she does! She likes to sleep in! Sometimes, I have to make her get up to go outside to potty. So, it will get better! Just takes some maturing.:)
