3yr old crate training

firstly ill say hi to every1 its my first post !!

although i have been viewing for a while now!

i have finally decided to crate my boy ( harvey ) a 3yr old brindle boxer
for the simple reason i cant tolerate his destruction anymore

although my house is dog safe he still manages to chew anything in reach even door frames!!

whats the best way to go about it????

p.s he will only be crated at night and short periods during the day

also note i purchased him the biggest crate available one designed for great danes!!!!

advice would be much appreciated

i would suggest that you introduce the crate to your dog gradually and not expect him to get used to it immediately. however, if your dog takes to the crate right away then consider yourself lucky.
start out by having your dog go inside the crate for short periods of time while you are home. gradually increase the amount of time that he is left in the crate and eventually he should build his time up. the reason to start doing this while you are still at home is so that your dog does not begin to associate negative feelings towards the crate. if you start off by only placing your dog in his crate when you go somewhere, he will associate a negative experience to it, by thinking that everytime he is being placed into the crate....you are going to leave him alone. some dogs develop a seperation anxiety complex as a result. that is why it is so important to gradually introduce the crate to him. you can also place some toys in there that will keep him occupied, like some chew toys. i would recommend a kong, chew rope, or something else that is heavy duty for him to chew on. i would stay away from toys with squeakers in them because dogs can get the squeakers out and accidentally lodge them in their throats. toys with squeakers in them should always be given to your dog when you are able to supervise them. good luck. :)

Good luck! We crate Kody and it has been very sucessful, however, we can only leave him in the living room. He will cry for long periods of time if crated anywhere else! The trainer suggested leaving him in the room that we are in the most, it was the living room for us. We leave on the radio and put chew toys and leave a treat with him. Best of luck!

touch wood he's doing well 3 nights running now no crying at all untill about 6.30 in the morning thats when hes usually let out anyway!!!!

so no need to set my alarm!!!

ok now nearly a week in hes started barking @ 5 in the morning!!!!!!

every morning!!!!!

also barks when i go out even tho his crates left open all day and he goes in when he when he wants to without me prompting him !!!
