2 stupid questions

I just saw an ad in our local paper for some boxer pups (we are already looking to add another) and the ad stated that they were fawn and reverse brindle. What exactly is reverse brindle?

Second question: How long should you wait before adding another boxer to the family? My baby is 2 and a half months old and we've had her for 2 weeks. I just love her so much I want another and hubby has agreed that another one would be twice as much fun. Thanks a bunch!!!

Your best bet in adding another pup to the family is (1) Don't get the puppy from the paper or a back yard breeder or an irresponsible breeder who doesn't health test and (2) To wait until the puppy you have is about 16 months old so that you are able to give the one you already have all of your time and attention in these critical first months that it needs. This will be especially important when your puppy hits the 6-8 month mark through 12-16 month mark which is considered their "terribe twos or teenage months" and can be difficult. At 2 1/2 months old her trainig for life hasn't really begun yet.

If you really just can't wait until the one you have is 16 months old then please don't buy one from the paper, or the pet store or from someone selling cute puppies with a sign by the side of the road, that is (1) supporting the poor treatment of a good portion of the animals involved and poor breeding practices by back yard breeder who are destroying this breed and its characteristics and (2) stand a MUCH better chance of getting a sickly dog now or in the future as health testing on parents was not done (most of thse dont show up until between 1 and 2 years of age most of the time).

Good breeders who are trying to better the boxer breed and reputable breeders who show and/or health test their boxers before breeding never sell their puppes in any of the above ways. You will read many horror stories of BYB dogs on here and its heartbreaking. You potentially set yourself up for a lot more vet bills and a lot of heartache in a boxer that died young when buying from those questionable srouces. Yes those problems CAN happen in well bred health tested animals but MUCH less oftern and if/when they do a breeder can help you and will want to help you.

This is all my opinion but i honestly feel is your best option.

oh woops, a revers brindle is a brindle who has a lot more black and therefore looks like a black dog with often a small amount of fawn stripes, they are much darker in color and sometimes can even look black at their darkest. (black is not a geneticlaly possibel trait in boxers but they can sometimes look it in a very very dark reverse) a normal brindle looks like a fawn boxer with black stripes.

To answer your first question, a reverse brindle is when the background color is black and has fawn striping (opposed to the fawn background with black striping of a brindle).

Second I would hold off from getting a second puppy. I know right now everything probably seems fun and easy and great. But the puppy is only going to get more demanding and the training does take a lot of work and time. I know when I was going through it, Tyson was much more response of it when it was just us two in the house. I could not imagine what it would have been like if there was another dog distracting him.

Good luck and enjoy that little one.

3 months after getting my boxer we got a golden retriever puppy and boy is it alot of work having two puppies. All is great but I'll never get two at a time again. It's very hard to train 2 puppies (just training one can get stressful). Next time I'll probably wait until my first one is closer to one year. Of course people told me not to do it and I did anyways so I'll understand if you still decide to get one but understand that it's hard.

I would wait as well and as it has been suggested please stay away from newspaper ads and take some time to find a reputable breeder so you can enjoy your new addition for years to come.

Thanks!!!

Thanks to you all for your advice...we have decided to wait to get another puppy...we will also be doing a lot of research on local breeders before we get the second whenever we make the decision to go ahead and add another...I can kinda relate to having two puppies in the house having raised twin skin kids (now almost 7)...there were times I thought I was going to pull my hair out with them...is there a forum on the site that will give me a list of questions to ask a breeder? The pup I have now was a gift from my mother-in-law...She studded her male with a female and decided to get pick of litter for the stud fee...she knew how badly we wanted a boxer pup...well thanks again...
