Boxer Buddy
Hi all,
Some of you may know that we recently adopted a 6&1/2 year old neutered brindle boy named Bubba (I've nicknamed him Bubby - he's too cute!) from a rescue org. We are thrilled with him, he's pretty well trained & great with our cats. We made the right choice, he fits in so well with our family. We are IN LOVE!
Anyway, 2 issues: He's limping a bit (left front leg), mainly when he first gets up or after he's been walking too long. He doesn't whine or cry & he continues to bear weight. We cut down his food portions a tad (he gained quite a bit in the 6 weeks he was in foster - we were told he was 65lbs, but he ended up at 81!) so he can lose a few, and we make sure he gets enough exercise without overdoing it (a couple of 10-15 minute walks around the block as opposed to a longer walk to the park, etc.) Bubba was seen by the vet today, and he wasn't too concerned. I was wondering if glucosamine and/or chondrytin (sp) can be used to alleviate arthritis discomfort, or are they mainly used as prevention? Should I try a low dose anti-inflammatory instead? Being an older dog, Bubba is not extremely active, but he loves to play catch with a ball or frisbee, and he loves to go for walks.
Now, the skin tags. Bubba has 2 small ones (one on each butt cheek,
) and a very large ugly one right in the middle of his chest (please take a look at my gallery, it's pretty clear in one of the pics.) The foster's vet and mine both feel it's a skin tag, and that removing it is optional. It has not changed in size or shape in at least 8 weeks. We would prefer to remove it (first of all, it's really unattractive, secondly I'm worried it'll catch on something or another dog may accidentally scratch it during play causing it to tear & bleed, third, I'm tired of everyone saying "ewwww, what the hell is that? Also, if by chance it's more than just a tag, the vet would find that out during the procedure & we can deal with it immediately.)
We were given a quote of almost $400 to remove all 3 tags - is that about right? He will have to go under general anesthesia (which I can't help but be nervous about) and he'll be at the vets for most of the day.
Thanks for reading this, sorry so long. Any ideas and advice are greatly appreciated!

I did see the thing you are calling a skin tag, and I can see why you would want it removed. It really looks nasty and I can see why you would be concerned about it getting ripped and bleeding. I would personally want to know exactly what that is and have it removed also. As far as what the vet is charging, I would say that is probably a fair price. I just had my baby to emergency vets and my regular vets for pnemonia and I have well over $300.00 in that trip and she had to go back again today for a yeast infection in her ears from the antibiotic she had to take for the pnemonia. It seems to be a never ending process, but with what they give us in return, how could anyone put a price tag on their medical bills. They soooo deserve it.
