Jade had 2 lumps taken out of her side yesterday (thankfully they were nothing serious) and has stitches now and I was hoping to get some advice on how to keep her from wrestling with my golden retriever. To my surprise (when she was spayed she was down for days) she was back to herself this morning wanting to play and of course my golden has been anxiously awaiting play time with her buddy. They both have energy that needs to be burned so I had my daughter take them for a walk after school today and she said that Jade just shivered and wasn't very excited to be walking in the freezing cold weather (she's never liked being out for long in the cold unless she's running around) so I guess long walks aren't my answer, I just don't know how to help them burn the energy without them wrestling with each other. I'm so nervous that the golden is going to accidently rip open one or both of her incisions. The stitches are in for 7 -10 days, will I have to keep them from wrestling around the whole time or after a few days will the incisions be healed enough for some rough play? She has 2 stitches in each incision. I have a feeling that the next week is going to seem like forever. Any advice on how to get through the next week with 2 dogs that love to wrestle but can't will be soooo appreciated.

I had a lump taken off Napoleon last week, he also has stitches. I too was concerned about playing so rough. I was told, if he feels like playing and is not biting at the stitches, leave him alone, but if they become red or swollen, separate them for a while. So far, so good. The first couple of days he was a little tinder but his hair is even growing back.

He goes back in on Saturday to get the stitches removed.
We will not know about the lump for a few more days, they had to send it to Auburn to be analyzed.

My Sadie has 2 staples (does your vet use staples?) in her neck from a dog bite wound (a pit bull attacked her!). Nothing seems to slow her down from playing with her brother Gareth. I look up and they are pulling on each others ears and necks and she doesn't flinch a bit.

I hope the dogs know when to quit playing so rough. I haven't had any trouble with the staples coming out or anything.

Thank you for the reassurance that she probably won't get hurt, it just makes me nervous watching them. When they seem to get too carried away I tell them 'that's enough' and they'll stop for awhile.

Sandy's mom - I hope Napoleon's lump is nothing, my vet cut Jade's lumps in half and was able to determine from that that they needed to come out cuz they could have ruptured but they were nothing serious (thank goodness).

Susan3283 - I'm so sorry that your poor baby was attacked, that must have been really scary. Being that the incisions are each only about 1 1/2 inches long the stitches probably are easier. I don't think I could handle watching them pull out staples, Jade is quite the drama queen.
