2 females

Hi everyone! I have a 1 1/2 yr old female who is just wonderfull. We just came across someone who has a 6-8month old female that they just cant keep. I don't know all the details about the dog yet we will be talking to the owner later today or tomorrow to find out all about her but I have heard some people say you should not have 2 females in the same house together and then others say it should not be a problem. Our dog is kennel trained and we would be kennel training the new dog should we get her. We also have a good size yard to accomidate both. Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

I think it depends on the dogs. I'd have them meet in a neutral place--not your house/yard or the other's house/yard. See how that goes, and if it goes well, you could introduce them at your house. Some people here have females that get along great together, and others have a female that would like to kill any other female around. My Samantha, hates other dogs, and I was afraid she was going to kill Beau when I got him. She has learned to tolerate him, but I think she would probably fight to kill another female.

Two females

I think it's all about your home not the dogs I take sadie to daycare twice a week and many of the workers there have two females, they truly get along great.

Indeed many people have two females and it works out great - especially if both are spayed early and there's a clear hierarchy in your 'pack'. The thing about females though, is that IF they fight, then it's serious and very difficult to stop :( It usually doesn't start until both are mature adults - which is why people are so surprised when two dogs that have got along perfectly well for a year or two suddenly want to kill each other. If you do choose to get the second girl, you'll minimise the chances of any problems by having both spayed asap (if they're not already, of course) and by being *very* clear about the pack hierarchy and rules in your household. I have two females and they are great together. It really just depends on the two dogs themselves.

This is very true. Once they start fighting, they tend to "seem to forget", but they hold grudges and the slightest thing will set them off again. I have two girls who are not allowed to be together, after several serious fights we just couldn't chance it anymore.

I have 3 Dogs ... A Female Border Collie ... A Femal Boxer .. and a Male Boxer ...

The females get along great, and have not had the slightest bit of problems with one another ... We had the Benjie(Collie) before we got the Boxers, so I think it was known from the start who was the Alpha Dog!!!

But like everyone else here says... I think it depends on the dogs themselves .... If you introduce the new dog ... Don't forget the "other" dog ... Jealously is rife ... and will not help the dogs relationship if your "old" dog thinks that the "new" dog is getting all the attention!!! Love "em both and I think you will be fine!!!!!
