I wanted to ask for input before I take Spice to the vet. She will be two in January and she has not been spayed and has not went into heat. I'm not trying to mate her or anything just was concerned that it has not happened. What are the signs (just in cased I missed them!) Never had a female dog before and was a little concerned that something else could be wrong. Help!!

it is different with all female dogs.. mainly they have a reddish disharge, and swell up around the vulva.. they will also stand if you put pressure on there back end and move their tail to the side..I have had dogs though that dont really discharge that much at all u dont notice.. only thing u notice is the swelling around the vulva

If she not 2 until January, that makes her only only 17 months. The majority of bitches come into heat around 6 months, but it's not abnormal for it to be quite a bit later. It's also possible that you missed it. The bleeding is not always very obvious. :) You could check with the breeder and find out when her mother first came into heat. They will often follow similar cycles. :)

You could also have your vet check her out to make sure that there is nothing wrong. It would at least put your mind at ease.

I have several female boxers, and siberian huskies as well. My experience so far is that they have not gone into heat until abuot 18 mos of age. I had one boxer that went into heat at 12 mos, but the rest didnt go into heat until 18 mos, which for us has been normal.
