Hi,

I am new to BoxerWorld and would appreciate any tips and advice.

So Paco is 11 weeks old and will walk only if leading ahead, the moment i walk fast and get ahead of him, he stops walking, Period!..

Tried giving him treats, made him sniff inside a treat bad and hoped he would follow, used a GentleDog harness, used praise, begging, pleading, patting my leg, but he would rather choke to death than walk behind or beside me.

Otherwise he is a fantastic puppy, very smart, potty trained, will go to his crate when i say " go to bed" , obeys "sit" and "shake".

Please help.

Umer.

My puppy was "weird" about walking until about 16 weeks. Sometimes he would walk and sometimes he would plant himself and not move. Now he walks great. It may just be a few more weeks before he really likes this exercise.

How have you gone about teaching the pup to walk on leash? It's usually best to spend some time acclimatising pup to collar + leash, then working on teaching them to follow you inside the house, working up to your yard, etc. And then finally tackling the big outdoors.

I sometimes make him follow me in te yard and give him his treats while he is following me, also tried to give let him run around with his leash in the house a couple of times.

And yes, sometimes he walks great but most of the times he glues himself to the ground.

Maybe i just need to wait a couple more weeks. What do you think?

Thanks,

Umer.

Isaac at 16 weeks is struggling some also but I am beginning to think it is
because he gets scared, he always walked OK when the Beagle is along
but I train him alone and that where he puts up a fight good advice from
GM is to work him in the yard and then increase the environment challenges

Millie also used to do this, and looking back I suspect it was because we were walking her for too long. She was taking a break. At 11 weeks, that's almost 3 months so like 10-15 minutes MAX is all the forced (leashed) exercise he can tolerate. Maybe he is just tired.

My Bruce is 13 weeks old now, and is just starting to walk on lead. I started off in the house as he got WAY too distracted outside. I would walk around the house with Bruce on lead and treat him occasionally. He still has trouble outside when there is something really interesting going on, but he is getting there. The first few weeks he hould plant himself down and pull backward if he felt that the direction of the walk was not totally up to him. Good Luck!

my puppy had the same problem when she was younger. granted she's only four and a half weeks old but she loves going for a walk and walks great on a leash.
starting out, to get her used to the leash i simply clipped it on her collar and let her run around the the house and yard with it. we did this several times a day and she eventually became bored with it and left it alone. then we started walking; short walks first then granually extenting the distance. it takes some patience, but it is worth it.
hope this helps

Boy I miss those days :P All you guys with babies :)

I think it just takes some getting used to on the puppy's part. At first Rudy was the same way. What I did was put the collar and leash on her and just let her run around the house with them on (supervised of course). At first they seemed to bother her, or she thought they were a toy, but after a while she started to ignore them. Then once we started going outside with it she was a little leary about all the sights and sounds of the neighborhood, but after a while she was pulling me around the block and we had a different problem. It's been over a year now for us and she is just now becoming very well behaved on walks. We went through times when she would pull and pull, then periods where she was just all over the place but straight. Now most of the time she get's through the full walk either right next to me or a couple steps behind.

The point is it's not automatic that they know just what to do on leash. It takes practice, consistency and patience, but once they get it it is worth it.

I had the same problem with my pup Thor - he's 9 weeks old. Well he's still not perfect but he's getting there - I tried the follow the treat thing and either he was way to interested in the treat or he's lose interest in it. so my trainer gave me a trick that is working wonders for not walking a head of me - it's not really heel but it's a step in the right direction. basically you start to walk and when he jets out in front change directons and start walking the other way - and do that every time her tries to take the lead. You may not get far from the house, and you may look silly to your neighbours - but Thor is 100% better from this method- as I said he still has a way to go - but I can actually get a few blocks away from the house before I have to turn now

Good luck
