104 degree temperature

My pup, Currie is 7 months old she looks thinner than she did two weeks ago. We have changed her food a couple times lately as we try to find something healthy and semi-affordable. She didn’t seem to mind the changes, she still ate, no vomiting or anything.

I was worried that she looked too skinny, puppies grow and change to quickly, I’m not sure how much she lost but she now weighs 40 pounds. She acted lethargic yesterday so I took her to the vet. We just moved so I had to pick a new vet…quickly.

I told the vet that Currie wasn’t acting like herself and he noted that she was skinny. She hasn’t been vomiting and we found one tick on her ear 3 weeks ago but other than that she was been bug free. He found that her temperature was 104 degrees and said it should be around 100. He was worried about that so he kept her overnight to do some blood tests.

I called to check in this morning and they said the test were not back yet and Currie was “still feeling crummy”

I know she is under the care of a professional but the waiting is driving me nuts. Any ideas what could be wrong with her?

Is this a 24 hour vet? Most vets aren't which is why I ask, and it's just silly to leave a dog overnight at a vet office if no one is there keeping an eye on it.

As far as what is ailing your dog, fever alone isn't very telling. Any number of things can cause a fever, which is why your vet wants to run tests.

It's not a 24 hour vet. I though that was a little strange to have to leave her but they said they were going to give her an antibiotic and keep on eye one her temp. While they wait for the blood test and they wanted to get a full poor sample.

They didn’t give me any idea about what could be wrong with her but they said that a temp. That high can be dangerous.

Like I said this was a new vet for me because we just moved but they were recommended by a coworker.

I do agree with the previous post, when recommended to me that Riggo needed to be hospitalized I took him home because they do not even have staff that stay the night in our local "Vet Hospital". It is easy to be trained on what you need to do, I gave my dog antibiotic injections for a month, along with IV fluid twice a day...thank goodness it all payed off and he is fine now. I would just ask for them to teach you how do give the medication or signs they want you to watch for. It is very costly to have your dog stay overnight and you can probably do a better job by just bringing him home.

Totally agree here. My boy had foreign body removal surgery and I brought him home afterwards as they do not have 24 hour care at my vet and the 24 hour ER was WAY too expensive. I was told to take his temp every couple of hours and call my vet it went above a certain number, they showed me how to give sub Q fluids, antibiotics and pain medication, what to watch for if he needed to be seen by a vet ASAP, etc. It was a long couple of nights I admit, but at least I knew he was being watched and checked up on (let's face it you don't know 100% even if they're at the 24 hour place) since I was the one doing it. And doing IV and sub q fluids, etc generally isn't too difficult.

Tuesday update

They said there is something wrong with her liver function and that she is anemic. They are waiting to see how she responds to an antibiotic to find out what's causing her anemia. I wanted to take her home but they insisted that she stay. I said if they were just waiting to see if she got better, we can do that at home where she wont be locked in a cage. Then the vet pointed to another dog in a cage hooked up to a blood bag and said “we don’t want her to end up on blood like this guy” and flicked the blood tube with his finger.
After I left I started thinking that guy was giving me attitude and I just took it! I just want to do whatever it takes to get her better.
I’m thinking I might have to force them to give me her medical records and take her to another vet.

Well I agree with him to a point, but if nobody is there overnight how would they know if she needed blood at 2:00 AM or not? YOU on the other hand would be there and KNOW she needed to be taken to a 24 hour vet.

Your vet can voice their opinion and state their reasons, but in the end it is YOUR decision, and I personally would want them to explain to me what they are doing there that you cannot do at home and why her staying there makes that HUGE of a difference. Personally IMO dogs tend to do better in their own environment anyway. I mean if they want to be able to monitor her during the day I can partially understand, however if nobody is there at night nobody is monitoring her at that point anyway. I know my vet's office the staff goes home around 6:00 PM and nobody is back in the office until 7:30 AM, that's over 12 hours that nobody is there, so how would they know if she needed something during their non business hours?

From what you have written so far in your post...I think if it were me I would take her home and get another opinion at another vet that will show more interest in treating you as well as Currie....they don't seem too sympathetic at your present vet's office....tale care and please keep us updated...

Not to mention they charge extra for "overnight care" and for what?? Not like they have to pay staff to do anything. Always makes me feel like all they want is the money.

I know after my boy's surgery my vet wouldn't ALLOW him to stay at their place, I either had to take him home or transport him to the 24 hour vet as she was adament that he not be unattended all night long. That's how it should be IMO.
