I have a 10 year old male who is not neutered. We move into another house a couple of months ago. The house is small and my dog keeps peeing in the basement even when we are home. We take him out 2 - 3 times a day and in between he goes in our large fenced backyard. I am wondering as to whether the house may too small, he is freaked out from the move. Either way, I would love to know how to stop this. I am very frustrated. Any ideas?

Just curious as to why your male is not neutered? Intact males have a much greater drive to mark things. Other than that, he may have a UTI or infection of some sort. At his age, I would be inclined to have the Vet check him out.

Perhaps the former tenants had an animal that they kept in the basement.
YOUR dog might just be marking HIS new territory.
And, YES, he probably IS freaked out from the move. Remember how stressful it was for YOU to move? The packing, etc....your dog didn't have any idea what was going on, and now he is in all new surroundings. Our dogs may not understand English, but they DO understand when STRESS is making US freak out.
I would surround him with HIS stuff....bedding, toys, perhaps things with YOUR scent on....and give him some time to adjust to the new abode. He also needs LOTS of attention from you.
I'm sure you will get ideas from other people here. Everyone is so friendly and helpful...especially to us "newbes."

i agree with courtney323. if your dog is not being shown in conformation, it should have been neutered quite some time ago. intact males, do tend to mark their territories more often.
his peeing might be caused by a UTI infection or incontinence, or perhaps even the recent move into a new home. either way, a trip to the vet should be made in order to rule out a possible medical problem first. in certain cases, when people move into a new home, they have to give their housebroken dog a "refresher course" in potty training beause of the new environment. they may actually have to be taught where the door is they need to go and stand by.

I think a vet visit is in order, particularly in view of the age of your dog and his intact status. It is quite possibly a stress and/or a behavioural issue, but it could just as easily have a physical cause. According to veterinary info. 80% of intact males over the age of 8 will develop prostate problems - and that can affect their ability to manage their bladders. So definitely worth having a vet check him over. And only if there's no physical problem do you need to look at behavioural issues.
