Hey everyone,

I didn't know where to turn, so I figured Boxerworld would be the best place to look for answers... I received a change in job status a month ago at my place of employment. My new position requires me to travel almost every week to my territory on the east coast. Needless to say, I have relied on a friend to watch "Bear" for the last few weeks while I've been away on business. I'm typically gone anywhere from 1-3 days at a time. The situation is weighing heavily on me because I know it's not fair to Bear, and my friend will not be able to do this forever.

Bear is 10-month old male, weighs in at approximately 55 lbs of lean muscle, and has been crate trained since 7 weeks of age. He is terrific with kids (I have a 4-year old daughter), completely housebroken, and a loving companion. He has received all of his puppy shots and has his rabies tag/certification.

I am torn about this and was hoping some of you may have suggestions or have gone through a similar experience. Any advice/support would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks.

Hi cubfan4real -

You could always consider doggy day-care or a dog walker/sitter while you are away on business.

However, if this frequency of travel is permanent and you are looking to surrender your dog, I would suggest you contact your nearest Boxer Rescue Group (I believe there are a few in the Pacific Northwest).

Good luck.

Cubfan, before finding a new home for your dog, have you talked to the breeder? A reputable breeder would happily take the dog back.

Happy to help...

Wow, this is a hard situation! I live in the area and could reccomend some daycare and dog walking services if you are interested in that. Even if you need help finding him a new home I would be happy to help. If you wanted we could meet at an area dog park for some fun time for the dogs.

Thanks everyone....

Yes, it is a hard situation. I've taken him to doggie daycare a few times, but as my travel frequency increases, the expenses will be difficult to manage. Additionally, he will be stuck there for days at a time....

In the event that I had to "surrender" Bear. Is it best to find a good family myself or use Boxer Rescue?

Placement Process

Placing a dog can be very time consuming, and frankly, if you don't have the time to spend with him, you probably don't have the time to screen households. But if you do decide to take it upon yourself, here are a few pointers:

1. Require an adoption fee- this will help weed out the lookly-loos and people without the financial means to care for the dog. You can decide in the end if you really want to charge this amount.
2. Require references, including their vet. Make sure to ask if the current pets are up to date on vaccinations, heartworm preventative, flea and tick preventative, etc.
3. Set up a 'play date' with the perspective home. This will serve as both a home inspection and to see how everybody (people and dogs) interact.
4. Once you think you've found the right family, draw up a legal contract stating what kind of conditions the dog should enter into and what should be done in the future in case the dog doesn't work out.
5. DON'T GIVE UP!

There is a good rescue group in your state, however, I am unsure if they are currently accepting dogs. You might want to contact them and see if they are willing to help you place him, they might have someone looking for a dog that fit's him perfectly.

Everything you've done so far is very admirable. KUDOS to you! :)

Good luck in your search!

Hello Cubfan4real

I just read your heartbreaking delemma. If you are still thinking of surrendering Bear to a good home I would like to work something out to adopt him from you. I live in Kenosha and have been looking for a male boxer companion to adopt for my two boys ages 6 and 3, and their "sister" (Boxer) Abby. I have a fully fenced in yard with lots of room for him to run and play with Abby and the boys. We are a boxer loving family and Bear would be pampered just like Abby.

If his is an option we would like to meet you and Bear. Please let me know.

Thanks, and good luck!

ERRN -

you need to post your Introduction. This is required of all new members, and should have actually been your very first post upon joining.

Also, I would suggest you contact your nearest Boxer Rescue if you are looking to adopt. Boxerworld does not allow users to post any sort of private contact information (email address or phone number), so it's rather hard to organize an adoption through this site. We do not facilitate adoptions through Boxerworld.

Please read the Rules. Thanks

There is a Midwest Boxer rescue, just google it if you want to check it out.

Sorry to hear about your dilemma.

Hi Cubfan,

I have just had to put my ten year old boxer down due to a brain tumour. My heart is still broken but maybe we can help each other.

I live in central Ontario, in the country. My son and his wife have just moved to Milwaukee and they are coming up here on Thursday next (flying) so could bring the dog with him. JJ (my son) picked out my Spike so I would trust his judgment. Spike was my third boxer. I really love the breed am a very responsible owner.

Now, how could we do this? Would it be possible for you to send me your telephone number so we can talk and then perhaps JJ and Sue-Anne could see your pup. and we could all go from there.

I also have a very lonely fifteen month old golden doodle and am at home all the time.

I look forward to hearing from you.
