Mommy and Daddy Had unexspected litter

These puppies weren't planned and will be family pets. There were 9 of them and the owner (a friend of my husband) just wanted to get them all a good home. The dad is all white with a brown patch on his eye.
I had a boxer as a teenager so I wanted to adopt one, so I picked the biggest male in the litter which was also the first born. At 5 weeks I took him to the vet to see what was needed but he was too young. At 6 weeks the puppies started running loose in the yard and some got lost so I picked my baby up and took him home. At 7 and 8 weeks he received all his puppy shots and was wormed. I guess had the owner planned to sell, or wanted to invest money in a litter of 9 pups he would have done so. But he didn't.
That's why I got his duclaws and tail done. He is downstairs now waiting for his first meal of the day. I got big kisses and his spirit is up. I think it was harder on me. :(

When I asked the vet about the tails on the litter of pups that we had, he said he would do the tails up to 5 days old. He would not do the tails after that.
I took the pups in at 3 days old...we were only there at the office for about 15 minutes. He did all 6 pups and only charged me $5.00 per puppy.

Glad he is feeling OK. I was just surprised as a vet over here wouldn't amputate a tail at 9 weeks unless there was a problem with the tail ie broken or damaged in some other way. Will the recovery take long?

We
spent alot of money on our litter including all their first inoculations and worming several times. All the puppies went to their new homes complete with food, blanket, toy and diet sheet. I also keep in regular contact with all my babies. Just because we kept their tails intact doesn't mean we were unwilling to spend out on them... they cost me more than I made on them!

Blade's tail ....is history

The docking cost me $100. It appears to be perfect now. (the right length) He hasn't cried or acted like he was in pain at all. Thank God. LOL:p

Personally I like the look of the longer dock. The vet that docked Nedra's tail docked it longer, and I like the length that it is. One thing that I hate the look of the tails that are docked so short that the dog hardly has a tail at all.

She's got a little curve to it, but only when she is *really* alert, like here: http://www.boxerworld.com/cgi-bin/photo/index.pl?photo=135 . For the most part, like when she prances around with her toys, it is actually fairly straight.

Traditionally Weimaraners have longer docks because they are hunting dogs. The tails are docked longer so that the hunters can still see the dogs in high brush.

I was under the impression that it was the 2 vertebrae.....

My vet says people are mistaken , that a new born pup does not actual vertabrae in the tail.
They actually have a gristly cartlidge, that later becomes vertabrae and if you run your fingers firmly into the tail there is often some irregularaties.
It is probably this that has led people for years to say "Dock at the second joint or vertabrae"
Believe me I have tried to feel for these mysterious "vertabrae" but have never actually felt them?
