Lamb Allergy

I am curious - does anyone out there feed their boxer a lamb and rice based food and if so, does anyone experience itching muzzle, feet, and chest when feeding that food?

I am at my wits end trying to solve Meeko's itchy problems. We now have her off the medrol low dose b/c i don't want to keep her on steriods. I am thinking of putting her on some type of immune boosting thing - maybe Vit. C and garlic or maybe missing link? I need advice.

Right now we are feeding what is supposedly a human grade turkey, fish, formula w/ no corn, wheat or soy. I just switched her yesterday - she woofed it down and begged for more, so she likes it, i just don't know if it will help. Breeder told me that all the other puppies/parents are on a chicken (not lamb) diet.

Any advice appreciated :)

We feed all our dogs Azmira Lamb Meal & Barley and have had no allergy problems. We tried Innova first but two of my babies had problems with the turkey. When we switched we were told by a holistic vet that Azmira contains herbs that ease digestion. All my dogs love it and have nice shiny coats.

This is an interesting topic. Right now, I'm using Solid Gold Hund n' Flocken (lamb and rice based). I noticed Solid Gold also has a beef and barley based MMillenia dog food (yes, it's spelled with two "m's."

Anyone out there have any experiences with the MMillenia product?

Keep in mind that it takes time for a food change to result in allergy relief (if it's the food causing the allergy).

My BT has been plagued by allergies (itchy feet, elbows, ears) for almost all of her 7 years. Since switching to Canidae in July, she's been significantly better but it took almost 6 weeks before we noticed any changes.

Give it time (at least 2 months) to see if the itching clears up - in the meantime, you can give her Benadryl (just the allergy formula, not cold and allergy combo, 1mg per lb of body weight, no more than twice a day) when she gets really uncomfortable.

Good luck!

If you do want to try a supplement that is GREAT for stopping the scratching and chewing I recommend 3Vcaps, they are all natural and are great for the skin and coat besides helping with the allergies. My vet will not prescribe steroids except for a last result and he put my Collie mix on it, she had her rear chewed raw, and within 30 days she was not scratching or chewing and her hair had all grown back and no more scabs. It is also pretty cheap, you can get it online, vet or from pet catalogs, I am not sure about pet stores as I don't have any large chain stores around here.

Do you know where online I can order 3Vcaps? Right now she takes dermcap supplements, but i don't think they are helping.

So far the food we switched too is doing well on her stomach (no loose stools) but as other posts indicate, it's too early to tell if the itching/scratching will cease on this diet!

DermCaps have omega 3 and 6, and V3 only has omega 3 from what I remember reading. You can buy V3 in lots of pet catalogues like omaha vaccine and others.

Allergy Battle...

J-Bird, I'm sorry to hear about your furbaby's itching problems. You're not alone. Taz is riding in the same boat. Yes, I'm feeding him OMH (lamb & rice). Pro Plan really geared his allergies up to overdrive. He's only been on OMH for a couple of weeks and his itching has decreased but hasn't stopped by far. I'm holding out until at least 2 months to see if this is helping him. He's still scratching vigorously under the pits of his front legs (no fur there) and chews at his knees... He's on medication for ringworms which he's been on for a little over 8 days now. I hate to see him like this. I'm just trying to find the culprit in order to get rid of it hopefully once and for all... At times he barks at his fur! I give him Omega 3 & 6 (liquid form) in his breakfast kibble.

Curious - how old are Taz and Capone (I wanted to name my puppy Capone by the way!) - have your vets suggested any skin testing? It's very expensive but if Meeko doesn't rid herself of this by her first b'day (May, 2003) were going to do it b/c I don't know what else to do.

Also, do either of you use carpet fresheners (ie: Petfresh?) One person on the board said that may be the problem but we stop using it and didn't see improvement.

I'm pulling my hair out!
