I know this is a dumb question, but what the heck are the 'withers'? I was going to measure Ginger to see how tall she is, but don't know where exactly to measure her from. I was thinking the withers are the shoulders. Am I wrong?

    Thank you!

Yep, pretty close. The withers is the point between the shoulder blades where the neck meets the back. Here's a pictorial: http://www.americanboxerclub.org/boxerst12.html

The reason you measure dogs (and horses) to the withers is that that point doesn't move (as long as the dog is standing up, that is). The head, conversely, moves rather a lot ;)

Oh Okay, thank you! I was beginning to think that my question was so dumb no one was going to respond. It totally makes sense to measure from the withers & not the head. Thanks again!
