Wilson just had emergency surgery

We took Wilson to the vet on Tuesday b/c he was vomiting w/ a skin rash. Well, the doctor prescribed Amoxicillen and gave him a shot of prednisone for the skin rash. He said that if he was still vomiting on Wed. to bring him back. Well, he did ok Wed, but on Thursday morning, he started throwing up again what little was left. He threw up some bile also. He was probably 70 pounds before he got sick. On Tuesday, he was 58lbs and yesterday when we took him to the vet, he was at 54lbs. 3lbs in two days!!!.

Well, the vet xrayed him and said he saw a blockage. They tried to flush it out last night, and when we called this morning, they had already done surgery. My husband is going to check on him b/c the vet didn't even call us to tell us he was going to do it. Wilson got to the point last night that it was surgery or else.

How do I take care of him when he gets home? I know the vet will tell me most of it, but it is different when you 'know' what to do and when you've actually experienced it. Boxer's also have a different personality than a lot of dogs. I would really appreciate some input.

honestly... i think he will recover in no time. when bailey was younger heis testicles didnt descend. at 7 months he had to have them removed. they turned out to be no in his groin but way up in his abdomen and it turned out to be a serious op. the vet called me after to say that he was bleeding heavily from the wound during and after the op and that he was staying in. i was almost hysterical. i was soo worried about him and couldnt wait to see him. he came bounding out of the vets and was 95% HIMSELF the next day and only improved after that! i think boxers seem to have a very high pain threshold. hes done a few stunts were ive been afraid to look but hes just ran on oblivious! just give him lots of tlc and hugs and i bet hes just fine!

Thank you. Wilson is very strong, but he lost so much weight in 4 days that you can see every bone on his spine sticking up. They didn't even call and ask for permission to do surgery, they just went ahead and did it. He was very weak when he went in and was just starting to get deydrated

Our lab Cookie had ingested an entire roaster chicken off of the counter. The surgery saved him and he recovered well. What did your dog eat to cause the blockage, because you wont want that to happen again. Unfortunately Cookie is now at the bridge, he had severe seizures. I also know the vet should give you strict feeding instructions so his tummy has time to heal from the surgery.

that would kind of worry me too but at the end of the day its whats best for your baby and the vet did what they had too. i know with a blockage that they try to avoid surgery if at all poss. so maybe it just got to the point where it wasnt gonna come out (u know what it was yet?). its better out than in!
when u gonna get him home again?

My 1st boxer had 2 surgeries for blockages (he had a thing for eating rocks and other crazy things). He recovered very well and fairly quickly after both. His appetite was the last thing to really come back. The weight will come back...I am kinda concerned the vet did not even contact you about the surgeries. Rocky's 2nd surgery was also done on an emergency basis and we got the call from a tech who let us know the doctor was prepping him for surgery as we spoke. Maybe because it was the middle of the night...I would still want the call. Let us know how your baby is doing. Good Luck!

Update....

Wilson is coming home today. They have no idea what caused the blockage. It stunk so bad when they took it out that they had to double bag it and put it in the freezer. It feels like hard rubber covered in hair, but looks like none of his toys. There were also two other smaller things attached to his stomach, and the vet cannot figure out what those are either. He said to give him hamburger meat with the grease taken off mixed with an equal portion of rice. He can only have about a tablespoon at a time until he can hold more.

We went to visit him yesterday. He threw up twice while we were there and the doctor said it was because some of the bacteria is still in there. Wilson was already more active yesterday afternoon than he was the day before the surgery. I hated having to leave him there, but I knew it was for the best. He is going to be so spoiled with attention the next few days. When he feels bad, he wants to cuddle and he will get to!

I felt better when I went to see him and saw him walking around. He had gotten so weak and sick that I was worried about him pretty bad. Thanks to BW, I asked about ACE to make sure. The vet doesn't use that there. He also mentioned that Valium seems to do the same thing that ACE does. He didn't know of any warnings against using it on boxers, but he did know that it can kill a dog of any breed if it has liver problems. I really thank everyone for the support and advice. I can use all if it I get!

Another update...

We just were able to pick up Wilson last night from the vet. He was SO ready to go home. He is very active again, but he is also so skinny. I hate being able to see his hip bones like they are right now. The vet said he would gain weight very quickly though. I'm not supposed to feed him but a small amount very frequently, but the boy is SOOOO hungry. He is like, 'it that all I get? I'm starving!'. After he eats, he licks the bowl and the floor around it.

I am glad to hear that Wilson is feeling better!Herkie's recovery time from his laporotomy was very minimal.They actually bounce back very well...much better than us I'd say!Tell Wilson to take it easy for a few days...and we are sending lots of beans and slobbery kisses!
