Will My Puppy Destroy My Christmas Tree??

My huband and I are woried that our 4 month old will try to chew and pull on our tree and all the ornaments. Has anyone had this happen? Today he has been good but its only the first day....

Just make sure to keep him away from the tree when you are not there to supervise. If he goes towards the tree out of curosity that's ok, but if he should happen to try and get at anything on the tree redirect his attention elsewhere. The "leave-it" command works wonders......

I didn't put up a tree not because of the dog but because of my cat! She just doesn't understand the "leave-it" command....

Good Luck. Toby was 8 months last Christmas and he would not leave the tree alone no matter what I did. I had to move all the ornaments to the top half of the tree. It was an artifical tree. He bent all the lower branches downward. So.... this year I had to bend them right back.
So far this year he is doing better at leaving it alone. I think last year he just thought....WOW! A new play toy!
Have fun. Hope you do better than we did last year.

just a word of caution

Another question, will you tree destroy your pup?Never leave a pup unsupervised around a tree,its just too tempting for them,he looks at the tree, like its a big toy & it can be very dangerous for your pup,with glass balls or anything they break or swallow.I learned the hard way years ago,I came home & my tree was flat on the floor,decorations broken & scattered everywhere,my puppy cut her feet & was bleeding,I felt so bad for my baby this was my fault,its just too tempting for them.,Hanley

You could try setting up an X-pen around the base of the tree to keep the puppy away from it. This is our first Christmas for Holly, too. Scrapper has never bothered the Christmas tree, but Holly LOVES plants. She is a "gardener" and has ripped up a number of poor plants in the back yard. So I don't know about her and the tree. Another choice is to get a smaller tree and put it on top of the coffee table. You can still get one that's good-sized, just small enough to put up a bit. We did that last year with a five foot tree.

A quick squirt from a water bottle will work great for puppies and kitties.

My puppy is also 4 months old and has done very well with our tree. Keep in mind I didn't put any ornaments on the bottom of the tree. He was VERY curious at first but it is old news to him now. Sorta reminds me of when our children were toddlers.

I have been lucky so far... Luka understands "No" very well. It took him maybe, one day to learn. All I have to say is one "No" and he instantly stops, even with distractions. I took him with me to get the tree and we brought it home. I let him sniff it when I got it in place. He went for it once when i was decorating it, I told him "No"... after that, he's left it alone. At 15 weeks, he's a VERY good puppy.
I hope it stays this way. However, I won't leave him unattended with it.
