this may sound like a stupid question but that goes alone with the quote "the only stupid question is one not asked"...

i was wondering what is the right age to switch from puppy to adult dog food? i have heard many different answers for this so i'm just curious...

Many people do not feed puppy food to their pups, instead they go with an All Life Stages food such as Canidae for example. However those that do usually find that around the 4-6 month age is a good time. If you do a search in the Feeding Forum you will find lots of thoughts and advice. I am bringing home a new pup November 6 and she will be fed Natural Balance Premium from the word go. They also have Duck & Potato and Venison & Brown Rice so then I can rotate the taste & protein but still have her on the same food. Premium food is really hard to find here in Regina. Good luck with your decision.

I've never fed puppy formula. My dogs are very healthy and fit and weigh what they should. IMO, puppy formulae are just another way for dog food companies to get you to pay MORE for their dog foods.

I asked our vet the same question. He said that we could start him on adult food anywhere between 8 months and 1 year old...whenever we thought was best. According to one site I looked at, it stated that a dog should be switched when he turns 1. I'm thinking we'll probably switch our pup somewhere around 9 months old.

I agree with Dan.

Puppy Food is just a marketing scheme. You can start your puppy out on adult food. In my opinion, any time on puppy food is too long :)

You'll be fine to switch.

We started Tyson on puppy food, against his breeder's suggestion, and turned to adult when he was a year old. This is what my parents had always done, so I did it. When we get our next puppy I plan to follow the breeder's advice and start with the all stages of life food. I've done alittle research and I beleive this is the best way now.

Hmm never thought about not using puppy food.....I'll have to learn more about that. But in response to your question I think the bag that we used said when to switch depending on age/weight. I believe we had Porter on puppy until he was about a year.
